A few of my favourite things:

This article about how beauty is perceived in different cultures.

      smoothie

Smoothies from Pad Thai Rock n’ Roll in Koh Lanta.

I’ve never tasted anything like them, they are life changing.

The food is good too. I took my first bite of my fried rice, and I actually moaned. The chef (who cooks everything on a coffee cart sized counter right beside the tables) heard me and gave me a big smile. I’m pretty sure he gets that all the time.

We ate there twice in our first two days on the island, we wanted to go back the third day but couldn’t get there due to torrential downpours and flashflood warnings. We actually thought about trying to go anyways, but decided that our mothers would be pretty pissed if we were killed in a moped accident trying to get smoothies and fried rice.

We made a break neck trip there on our last day in Koh Lanta, I had to ride on the back of the moped without holding on since I had a smoothie in each hand. We almost got run off the road by a monkey and nearly missed our bus to Krebi but it was worth it.

I had a bouquet of roses just sitting around, no reason, slowly dying on my kitchen table, so I decided to do something with them.

We tried making rose water the day after my wedding, since we had so many roses to work with, but there was so much going on and so many people to see that we ended up leaving it on the stove too long and it was not a good situation.

For this batch, I used 3 cups of water with the petals from 12 red roses, and put them on to simmer for about half an hour.

Apparently there are lots of things you can do with it, I just plan on pouring it into a bubble bath. It’s a gorgeous colour, and it smells amazing.

Posted at 4:35 am by jasminedesirees, on February 5, 2014

I’ve had my eye on some MAC Ruby Woo for quite awhile now. I have a weird obsession with red lipstick, even though I usually buy it and only wear it once because I don’t like the way it looks on me, or it feels weird on, or something.

This colour is pretty much the perfect pin-up red so even though it was kind of expensive, after creep Googling it in the middle of the night for a few months, I decided to go for it. I also bought lip liner, which is apparently non-negotiable (who knew?) and really like the result.

It’s definitely red, it’s kind of like being kicked in the face by the colour, but hopefully in a good way. I also really like the way it feels on, usually when I wear lipstick I spend the whole day licking my teeth to make sure I don’t have any on there, or just keeping my mouth awkwardly still and try not to talk because it feels not so much like a mouth anymore and more like a decoration.

But this one actually doesn’t make my mouth feel weird, and so far hasn’t ended up on my teeth even once. Not to say that it has amazing staying power, I bought it on a ladies shopping trip, and then we went for drinks and split a massive plate of fries, and I probably thought I looked cute, but one trip to the washroom shut that down pretty quickly.

The colour had disappeared from everywhere expect the very outside of my lips and I looked full crazy, and possibly like a vampire. But you need to re-apply  your lipstick after eating, that’s just what life is like, no matter how many 24-hour lip-stains promise you otherwise. Everybody’s got problems.

I started working on this painting a few weeks ago. It’s a self portrait. Clearly.

Also, I almost neverrrrr take selfies, some people can do it and do it well, but I do not have those skills. I try everyone once in awhile just to make sure they are still really bad, but generally flipping through the gallery of resulting failures is so disheartening I can feel the will to live ebbing away.

When I got my lipstick, I had also just gotten my hair done, and was trying to send a picture to my husband. My phone sometimes makes weird .gif images if I take several similar pictures in a row, and this was the result. It makes me laugh so I decided to post it. Be kind.

Last Friday at work I happened to catch a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror and had a tiny panic attack at how crazy and straw-like my hair was looking.

I tend to go months without noticing or caring, and then one day a quick glance reveals how dire the situation really is and I need to get my hair done IMMEDIATELY and if I can’t find someone to do it, I’ll buy a box of black dye and get out my office scissors and do it myself.

Luckily I was able to get an appointment for the following day, and decided to go a bit darker again, as I’d had pretty light ombre for awhile. I also got my eyebrows done professionally for the first time in my life, it was pretty wonderful, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back.

I know my sisters will be excited as both of them have been known to drop helpful hints about my lopsided brows.

One of my favourite things about the salon, The Dollhouse in Brentwood, is the decor, it’s so whimsical and colourful, I always feel like Alice in Wonderland.

I received a Barnes and Noble gift card for my birthday about 5 years ago, and I set off to the store to claim my prize. I have been known to spend a good chunk of my time at bookstores, once I accidentally spent 6 hours in Chapters and didn’t even realize it. My frantic mother almost killed me, but I had just been browsing through all of the wonderful books and completely lost track of time.

I spent hours searching through every section trying to find the perfect book, it’s really a lot of pressure trying to make a decision like that. Or as Drew Barrymore put it in Ever After, “I could no sooner choose a favourite star in the heavens”.

Eventually after a lot of indecision and minor panic attacks, I came to the photography section, where I found this little gem. It’s possible I had been living under a rock, but I hadn’t ever really been exposed to Life magazine before, and I was completely blown away by the photographs inside. I bought it immediately, and have some of the images hanging in my room to this day.

Today I was creeping around on Amazon looking at Christmas gifts, and I happened into the section on photograph books. It’s taking every ounce of will power I possess to remember that I am supposed to be buying things for other people, not for myself, but there are a few I’ll be keeping my eye on until the new year.

A few things that are making me happy right now:

This book excerpt about Marilyn Monroe’s personal effects. She was very un-materialistic, and very slender, apparently. I don’t know why everything about her is so interesting, but I’m obsessed. It’s easy to look at all of the glamorous images of her and forget that she was a real person, so I love learning more about what she was really like.

This: Bulletproof Weeks by Matt Nathanson. I can’t stop listening to it.

When your husband goes to Mexico for a week and knows just what to bring you home as a present. Flavoured tequilas for shots, adding to coffee, and as a tequila maker once told me “putting on your kid’s waffles before you send them off to school.” Solid advice.

This amazing miracle in a bottle
. I’ve tried a lot of frizz fighting serums in my day, and they usually leave you with that slicked back yet puffy look that is so equal parts chic and attractive. This one can go on wet or dry hair, and make your hair shiny and frizz-free, but never greasy. It is my new favourite product, we are best friends.

Here are a few things that are making me happy right now:

This article about living in Hawaii. Makes me happy/homesick.

My co-worker went to Italy for a few weeks and brought me back some truffle risotto. Amazing.

I love discovering news words like this one:

fernweh – (noun) a craving for travel; being homesick for a place you’ve never been.

Also, I have recently discovered this amazing spray that has actual magical powers. I’ve been kind of hating on my hair lately because no matter what I do it seems kind of dry and frizzy. I tried using WEN for a few months, and as always happens when I try to do nice things for my hair, it completely rebelled and looked worse than ever.

Apparently my hair is still 13 years old and only likes things that are mean to it. But I tried It’s a 10 spray with Keratin last night, and my hair is soft, shiny and frizz free, and for the day after I wash my hair that is almost unheard of.

It usually takes at least two nights of me sleeping on/aggressively rubbing my head against my satin pillowcase to achieve this kind of sleek manageability. It’s a bit expensive, but worth it if these are going to be the consistent results.

Here are a few things that are making me happy right now:

I’ve been looking for a pair of black booties for a long time, one that is cute enough to wear out, but also has a low enough heel that I could wear them all day at work without wanting to fling myself off the roof. I found these ones from Asos a few weeks ago and I love them, they are comfy and cute, and there isn’t a hint of fringe anywhere on or around them.

This might seem very obvious to every other person in the world, but I had an epiphany a few weeks ago. I have about 5 chiffon button up shirts that I love, and are perfect for work, but I never wear them, because they are really sheer. I’ve tried wearing tank tops underneath them, but it’s hard to have two shirts tucked in, one of them is always rolling up and it’s bulky.

Sometimes I’ll see a woman on the street wearing a sheer white button up tucked into jeans without her whole bra showing and without looking like she is smuggling something under their shirt, and I think that she must be a wizard.

For years I’ve been seeing the cotton body suits at American Apparel and I always wondered “who is buying those?” and then last week I was like OF COURSE! Everyone but me is buying them! Anyways, I bought a couple, and my whole life is better already.

Semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies from Specialty’s are a thing of beauty. I have to bodily restrain myself from going in to get one every time I walk past, but sometimes I can’t resist, and then I thoroughly enjoy every warm chocolatey delicious morsel to the full capacity of my soul.

I hadn’t been loving my makeup in quite a while, no matter what I seemed to do it always looked the same, and not very good in my opinion, so I had a little bit of a “me” day and splurged on some new makeup from Sephora.

I actually just went in to get eyeliner, but all of a sudden I was replacing almost every product I use.

The verdict so far: I love the Moonshadow eyeshadow pallet, the Tarte cheek stain is amazing, and the Kat von D Trooper eyeliner is life changing. Go buy it immediately. It goes on smoothly without the dragginess of a lot of liquid liners, and the color stays all day without budging.

I don’t know that the beauty blender was an absolute necessity though, in essence I feel like I paid $20 for a sponge.
