      house renovations

Did you miss me? It’s been a pretty crazy few weeks! We bought a house in December, but we basically just shoved our stuff in it, and took off for California and Mexico. Then in January we had house guests for a few weeks in a row so we didn’t get much done, but we finally started working on it at the end of January.

We ripped out all of the floor, upgraded the bathrooms, and painted everything. At some point in February, we decided to put it up on AirBnB to rent it out for Spring Training (a big deal in the Phoenix area). We didn’t even have flooring in it then, but we figured we would be able to get everything done no problem.

I ended up traveling to NYC and SF for work during that time, so Derek basically was working on the house all by himself. I got back from SF last Sunday, and the renters were moving in on Wednesday.

I was working all 3 days as well, so before work and after work I was frantically cleaning and trying to get everything ready. Derek finished laying the last of the tile on Monday(!) and we actually managed to get everything done, just as our tenants were pulling into the driveway.

It’s basically a miracle we were able to finish in time, also I have the best husband in the world. It was actually kind of sad, the house looked sooo good after months of work, and then someone else got to live in it before we did! But we’ll be back in there on Wednesday, so we don’t have to wait too much longer.

      arizona

We bought a house! I’m not sure why we thought buying a house the week before Christmas when we aren’t even going to be home was a great plan, but here we are.

We got the keys last weekend (I was still in San Francisco) and started demoing right away.

Our goal is to have all of the flooring ripped out, the carpet replaced and the entire upstairs painted by Thursday because we have to move out of our rental and have it cleaned by Friday so we can leave for San Francisco on Friday night.

So my days recently look like this:

      1. Wake Up
      2. Work out. Only 10 days til the beach!
      3. Pack things, then realize I packed all the bowls and can’t eat breakfast
      4. Work all day
      5. Make something for supper, then head over to the new place
      6. Paint/do things for 3 hours
      7. Go home, shower, watch Homeland, go to bed

Which is really funny because previously after working all day I thought going to the library, which is like 3 blocks from my house, was too arduous a task to even consider.

I guess that’s why they say if you need something done, ask a busy person?

I’m really excited about the new place, the best part by far is the front porch, pictured above.

I plan on spending 98% of my time out there reading and drinking tea, and hoping I don’t get hit in the head by a golf ball.

I had a bouquet of roses just sitting around, no reason, slowly dying on my kitchen table, so I decided to do something with them.

We tried making rose water the day after my wedding, since we had so many roses to work with, but there was so much going on and so many people to see that we ended up leaving it on the stove too long and it was not a good situation.

For this batch, I used 3 cups of water with the petals from 12 red roses, and put them on to simmer for about half an hour.

Apparently there are lots of things you can do with it, I just plan on pouring it into a bubble bath. It’s a gorgeous colour, and it smells amazing.

    • put your back into it

Posted at 10:38 pm by jasminedesirees, on August 20, 2013

I’ve always been a big fan of backless shirts and dresses, probably because I’ve never been able to wear them. Well probably not never, but certainly not since the age of about 13. Sadly, having your entire bra hanging out of the back of your backless shirt somewhat destroys the look.

Gabi from Gabifresh kind of inspired me, she is a plus size model and she always says that if she really wants to wear something, she will find a way to make it work for her. I think that’s great, and also really true. You can’t do something the way someone else would do it, you have to do it the way that you would do it.

So this is how I would wear a backless dress. I got some pretty heavy duty elastic from Michael’s, and my favourite bra. I cut off the back of the bra, leaving about an inch on each side of the cup to attach the elastic to, and sewed on 3 strips of the elastic on one side.

Then I awkwardly put it on/ figured out the delicate balance between having it stay up, and having it cut off all circulation. Once I decided on that, I sewed on the elastic to the other side at the right tightness, and voila.

It takes a bit of wiggling to get into it, but it’s actually really comfortable, and I think it’s pretty cute. I may not be able to go completely backless, but I figured out a way to wear what I wanted, and make it work for me.
