Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on March 8, 2018

It’s been awhile since I did a favourites post, but there are a few things that I’m loving so I wanted to share.

First up, this sunscreen from Supergoop. Everyone knows you’re supposed to wear sunscreen everyday (especially if you’re living in Southern California) but I’ve tried so many, and I always feel like it makes my face white or messes with the makeup I apply on top of it.

This sunscreen is clear, and it’s light and feels like a primer once you put it on. It’s very similar to this one from Glossier, but while I’m usually a fan of Glossier packaging, I hated this little plastic cylinder, it felt empty as soon as I received it and it was expensive so I found myself not using it every day because I felt like there wasn’t much in there, if that makes sense.

Next up, most people have probably heard of Kayla Itsines’ BBG program by now, I’ve had the print out version of her workouts for years, but every time I’ve started to use them, I only made it a couple of weeks in before I would go back to my old workout routine.

I finally bit the bullet and downloaded the app, and it’s made a world of difference. I was hesitant at first because it’s $20/month, which is kind of expensive on top of paying for a gym membership, but I’m now nine weeks into the PWR program, and I haven’t missed a workout. It’s really motivating having the moves being demonstrated right in front of you, and seeing the time tick down instead of having to mess around with the timer between each set.

The workouts are getting more challenging, but they don’t take a lot of time, so hopefully I can keep it up!

The Shoptagr browser add-on (there’s also an app) lets you tag items from online retailers to save them for later, and gives you alerts when something you wanted goes on sale, or comes back in stock.

I love it because it lets me think about something for awhile before I buy it, and also lets me see when something goes on sale. There are a few items that I’ve really wanted but felt they were too expensive, and I’ve been patient and ended up getting them for a fraction of the cost because I kept watching. It can be risky because there’s always the chance it’ll sell out, but the savings are worth it.

I also find that it saves me money because often after a few weeks, I’ll have found something I like better or just re-thought something I initially really wanted, so it saves me from buyers’ remorse.

Finally, I’m obsessed with these shoes, I have them in purple, red and tan, and I will probably get them in every single colour, because they are comfortable enough to wear all day at work, or out at night, and hopefully provide some distraction from the fact that 99% of my wardrobe is black, like my soul.

      That’s all for now!

A few lovely things for today, when I’m snuggling up under the covers and dreaming of Christmas in Mazatlan. Wake me up when December ends.

My little brother graduated from high school a few months ago, and we were able to get family pictures done for the first time since our wedding. Love these so much.

A few lovely things for today, when I am having a House Hunters: International marathon, and making firm plans to one day live in an olive grove in Tuscany.

A good reminder. Live every day as if it’s your last, because one of these days, it will be.

A few of my favourite things:

This article about how beauty is perceived in different cultures.

      smoothie

Smoothies from Pad Thai Rock n’ Roll in Koh Lanta.

I’ve never tasted anything like them, they are life changing.

The food is good too. I took my first bite of my fried rice, and I actually moaned. The chef (who cooks everything on a coffee cart sized counter right beside the tables) heard me and gave me a big smile. I’m pretty sure he gets that all the time.

We ate there twice in our first two days on the island, we wanted to go back the third day but couldn’t get there due to torrential downpours and flashflood warnings. We actually thought about trying to go anyways, but decided that our mothers would be pretty pissed if we were killed in a moped accident trying to get smoothies and fried rice.

We made a break neck trip there on our last day in Koh Lanta, I had to ride on the back of the moped without holding on since I had a smoothie in each hand. We almost got run off the road by a monkey and nearly missed our bus to Krebi but it was worth it.

This video, by Glen Keane, who did the animation for The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

Love the message behind this. It seems like we’re told from a very young age that we can be anything we want to be, but then as we get older, as we get closer to actually being grown ups and trying to decide what we should be doing with our lives, we seem to be told instead that so many of our aspirations are childish, and that we need to grow up and get a “real job”.

It’s true that not everyone can be painter, or a writer or spend all their time outside with horses, but certainly some people are able to. And if some people are able to, then if you dedicate yourself to being the best writer, painter or horse whisperer you can be, then who’s to say you can’t  be one of them?

Here are a few things that are making me happy right now:

The complete collection of Grimm’s fairy tales, a first birthday present for my niece.

West Coast, best coast. Love her.

This list of the top 20 TED Talks, I’m slowly working my way through all of them. The range of topics is really interesting, and I like how they are able to take a unique point of view on everyday experiences and really open your eyes to different perspectives.

A few things that are making me happy right now:

This list of countries that Canadians are eligible to work and live in via working holidays visas. There are so many amazing places in the world, I want to live everywhere. And if you want something bad enough, you’ll figure out a way to do it. There are a lot of opportunities out there if you are interested enough to seek them out, and brave enough to take advantage of them.

The fact that it is officially spring, flowers are starting to bloom and I can wear dresses and sandals without freezing to death.

Cherry blossoms on my neighbour’s tree on a beautiful California day

I came across The Dictionary of Obscure sorrows when I was creeping around the web one day. It is a dictionary of made up words that aim to define feelings or occurrences that have no real definition.

This amazing Eyeko eyeliner is life changing. I couldn’t use liquid eyeliner before because it took so long to get the tiny, wispy little strokes even, and I usually ended up looking like Derek had punched me in the eye. Eyeko has a nice, thick tip so it’s like drawing on your eyeliner with a Sharpie. It is way easier to get a consistent line, and it stays on all day.

Sometimes I get free samples from Sephora, and it reminds me that the world is a lovely place full of wonderful people

A few things that are making me happy right now:

This article from thought catalog. It’s very true, if you can do good work and be confident in your own abilities, you can achieve the things you want to.

Also, this. Allie Brosh is a very talented blogger, and her blog Hyperbole and a Half has now been turned into a book. Hers is the first blog I ever read.  I’m really excited for her and I had really been wanting to read it but just hadn’t gotten around to ordering it.

Then a few weeks ago I was in the Phoenix airport on the way home from Mazatlan and needed something to read. I always bring library books with me or download something onto my Kindle when I’m flying, but this time I had forgotten, so I decided to buy a book at the airport. I walked into the store, and there it was, the very first book I laid eyes on. I bought it immediately, funny how things work out like that. You can buy her book here.

David’s Tea makes the most amazing tea I’ve ever had. It’s a bit expensive, but where else can you get tea that tastes like Red Velvet Cake, Birthday Cake, or has little gold balls in it that dissolve and make your tea glittery?
And then this video. It’s pretty hard to be sad when you’re watching that. It’s 24 straight hours of pure unadulterated joy and happiness.
