My little brother graduated from high school a few months ago, and we were able to get family pictures done for the first time since our wedding. Love these so much.

    • y-y’s wedding

Posted at 7:10 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 14, 2014

The reason we went to Toronto a few weeks ago was because my best friend Amanda was getting married. I don’t really believe in love at first site, but she is the closest thing to that I’ve ever experienced.

The second we met, at a party in the penthouse of a Honolulu apartment building thrown by friends of Swedish boy she was dating, we loved each other immediately, and were inseparable from that moment on.

She is one of those people who is really good at everything, her hand writing looks like calligraphy, and she is a former gymnast, and current model with a degree in Biology, she bakes amazing cakes, and she gets up at 4 am to watch Manchester United play soccer. You almost want to hate her, but you can’t because she is so kind, quirky and fun to be around.

We don’t get to see each other that often anymore, since we live across the country from each other, but I was able to go to her wedding and be a bridesmaid, and it was so much fun. Weddings are always kind of bitter sweet because you get to see someone you love at their happiest, but it’s also a time of change, and being around so many family and friends that you don’t know reminds you that as much as you love that person, you are just a small part of each others lives.

The good news is, even though we didn’t get to spend as much time together as I would have liked (which is true at ALL weddings) her family was so amazing and fun that I had a blast partying with them. They have another family wedding in October and I am considering crashing it, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.

Can’t believe my baby brother is 17 years old today. It seems like just yesterday he woke me up by throwing a bucket of cold water on my bed and my older sister and I dragged him into the bathroom and gave him a swirly. He is a lot bigger than me now, but I’m pretty sure we could still take him.

It makes me sad that I can’t be there to celebrate but hopefully I’ll get to see him soon.

Just some lovely things for a gorgeous day where lots of things went right, made even sweeter by the fact that yesterday was a miserable day, where nothing did.

A beautifully shot video of the ocean, with a beautiful message. If you love what you do, even if you never get rich and famous, you’ll live a life you will enjoy remembering.

      The Wild Rose

      Sometimes hidden from me

in daily custom and in trust

so that I live by you unaware

as by the beating of my heart.

Suddenly you flare in my sight,

a wild rose blooming at the edge

      of thicket, grace and light

      where yesterday was only shade,

and once again I am blessed, choosing

      again what I chose before.

      -Wendell Berry

Today is 4 years since I met the boy. Love you D, xx.

A few things that have been stuck in my head lately:

“Film noir gave us a term for the low-maintenance cheap-date type of woman, as personified by Ingrid Bergman and the other cool blondes. They were, in the gruff parlance, Class Acts. A Class Act does not bombard you with whimpering phone calls to the effect of why are you out with your mates watching the footie when you could be choosing sisal floor mats with me?

A Class Act does not take a split badly, or if she does, does so without so much as a peep. A Class Act is the silhouette disappearing into the night that you will no doubt remember-but will never talk to again. A Class Act will spend a lot of time alone, drinking spirits. A Class Act will never emerge from a local church in a shower of petals. A Class Act will never be a mummy, yummy or otherwise.

A Class Act will never have a husband who visit prostitutes. Forget I mentioned it.”- Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Love that book.

“Summer left and no one said a word.”- Matt Nathanson

“You are arguing that the fragile and rare thing is beautiful just because it’s fragile and rare. But that’s a lie, and you know it.”- The Fault in Our Stars

“Fuck that, I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong … I will never apologize. I stand here and I’m amazing for you, not because of you. I am not who I sleep with … I am not my weight. I am myself.”- Amy Schumer

“There is something absolutely divine — I mean, literally, the breath of God — in the ability to put someone else in your heart, to think of them first. But from the time of the greatest pornographer who ever lived, Shakespeare, we’ve demanded that love be something more. No, fuck Shakespeare — since the Song of Songs! And what happens is, the utter grandeur and magnificence of what love actually is gets overshadowed by this disappointment that it’s not the way we fantasized it should be.”- Jim, 55

Happy 21st birthday to my little rat sister today. We got off to a bit of a rocky start, sometimes I would eat your popsicles, sometimes you would try to stab me with a steak knife. You know, the usual.

But over the years I accidentally discovered that not only did I love you, I liked you a lot too. I have more fun with you than almost anyone else, and even though I miss you, I’m so glad you’ve adopted the islands and love them as much as I do.

I’m so proud of the tough, funny, smart chick you’ve grown into, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you, because I know it’s going to be amazing.

Also, I’m excited to finally go to the bar with you in ‘Merica and not have us both be named Jasmine.

    • my best friend’s wedding

Posted at 9:17 pm by jasminedesirees, on September 24, 2013

Over labour day weekend, my best friend got married in a gorgeous ceremony in Bend, OR. I arrived on Wednesday night, and despite a pretty terrible toothache, had such a great weekend. Nic’s family and friends are so much fun, so in addition to the actual wedding, it was pretty much just a 5 day party, broken up periodically by important bridesmaids duties like making bouquets and playing Cards Against Humanity.

Contrary to popular belief, I did NOT cry through the whole ceremony, but she looked so beautiful, and so in love, and I don’t think there are words to describe how happy I am for her and her wonderful new husband Mac.

I also began what I believe will be a life-long commitment that day, although mine was with a beverage. If you are looking for a sign that the world really is a lovely place, you can probably find it at the bottom of a lavender lemon drop martini.
