    • a beautiful mess

Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on January 8, 2016

Exciting news! I, a girl who never wins anything, except for that plastic container of cinnamon hearts when I was in fifth grade, won a set of Photoshop Actions from the DIY blog A Beautiful Mess right before Christmas.

I’m not amazing at Photoshop by any means, I’ve taught myself slowly for different jobs over the years, and we met a fellow traveller in Australia last year who gave us a copy of the program for our laptop (thanks Jake!) but I would definitely say I’m still a beginner. These Actions are cool though because you just have to pick one, and it automatically edits the image for you.

From there you can adjust the level, and turn certain layers on and off within the Action itself to play with it a little, but it makes it a lot easier.

Full confession, I have been writing for over three years on this blog, and I’ve never edited one. single. image. And not just because I’m lazy (although that’s part of it). It kind of feels like cheating to me? Anything can look amazing if it’s edited enough. I hate when I see a picture of something and it looks incredible, and then I see it in person and I’m like wait… why is this water brown?

But it’s nice to have the option, and I’m having fun playing around with these new Actions.

I picked an image from our trip to Cambodia last year, of a monk sitting on a building inside Angkor Wat and one of us snorkeling near Komodo Island to showcase some of the different options here:

This summer I was lucky enough to spend a week in North Dakota visiting my sister and her family. I don’t remember the last time I was able to do that, but it has definitely been a few years.

And even though North Dakota is about the last place in the world you want to be in the winter (unless you are bundled up by the fireplace drinking Rumchata), it sure is pretty in the summer.

    • a year of mornings

Posted at 8:30 am by jasminedesirees, on August 11, 2015

      a year of mornings

A few weeks ago I was sitting in a salon waiting to get my hair done, and I absentmindedly picked up a book to flip through while I waited. I was immediately captivated by the imagery in the book, which turned out to be A Year of Mornings.

The book is based on this blog, where two women who had never met in person decided to collaborate to share one image of their lives, every morning.

I am guilty sometimes of thinking that it’s only the big things in life that are worth sharing, but this book, and the images inside, immediately struck me as so beautiful and powerful, even though they were of nothing more exciting than the normal, every day struggle to get a family up, and fed, and off to meet the day. It might take a little bit more creativity and imagination, but that’s the point anyway, isn’t it?

It only took me about 15 minutes to flip through from start to finish, but I had ordered the book before I even left the salon. I had been staying with my parents in Montana the week before, and spending a lot of time with my mom, who paints in her spare time. We had talked about working on paintings together while I was there, but I couldn’t think of anything that I really wanted to paint.

The colours and composition of the images in A Year of Mornings were so inspiring that I texted my mom immediately to let her know that I had found my subject.

I’m sometimes hesitant to buy books anymore, I try to live as minimally as possible (just don’t look in my closet), and I have SO many books in Canada still that I haven’t been able to bring with me (I have my own library, basically. It’s a sickness.) but I know this book will serve as a source of inspiration for years to come.

A few lovely things for today, because I’m procrastinating and because job hunting is the absolute worst.

I’m not a very good photographer, that is just a fact. I love to take pictures, I used to go through a point-and-click camera every six months because I always had one in my purse, banging around, being stepped on, dropped, sat on, etc, because I never wanted to be without a way to take pictures.

That being said, I don’t technically know a lot about photography. After I bought myself a Nikon DSLR last January, I thought it would automatically improve my pictures exponentially, and it did, but also it just added more buttons and dials that I had no idea how to use, and I ended up taking pictures on Auto every time.

This year, I vowed that I would learn how to at least use my camera, so when I saw a Basic Photography class in Walnut Creek, I decided to sign up. The morning of the class I was so tired, and the urge to stay home and make a lazy breakfast with the boy was almost overwhelming, but I tried to remember my goal and summoned the motivation to get out of bed and go.

And I’m so glad I did. The class was with Source Photograhy, and the instructor, Gene, is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. We spent about an hour and a half talking about photography; light, ISO and aperture, and then the rest of the 3 hour class practicing and taking pictures.

He had lots of lenses that he was happy to let people borrow, and the best part is that once you attend a class, you can come back to that class as many times as you want for free, if you didn’t quite get something the first time, or just want to practice.

He lets people come in and use their studio to practice lighting and studio photography, even allowing people to bring in their own models, for free if he is in town. I learned so much in the short class, I know so much more about my camera and photography in general, and I feel confident enough to go out and practice on my own.

He also takes his student out on photography field trips, free of charge, where he’ll let you borrow his lenses and help you practice, so I’m going into the city with him this weekend to do some shooting.

I still have lots to learn, but at least I finally feel like I know what my camera can do so I feel like practicing will be a lot more fun, and less frustrating.

    • moulin rouge

Posted at 9:03 pm by jasminedesirees, on January 7, 2014

One of the things I did on my jam-packed weekend in Bend a few months ago was check out some of the cute little antique shops that are scattered around. There is something about finding an item that you love, and knowing that it has had a whole other history that you’ll never know about before you found it that’s really neat.

When I was creeping through the old hardcover books and magazines at the back of one store, I found this magazine, A Night at the Moulin Rouge, published in 1939. It has pictures and descriptions of all of the different performing acts, and lots of beautiful women.

I bought it right away, but I haven’t decided what to do with it. I wanted to frame it and hang it on the wall, but the photo spreads inside are wonderful so it would be a shame to only have the cover on display, but it’s also pretty old so I wouldn’t want to just leave it laying around without protecting it somehow.
