I received a Barnes and Noble gift card for my birthday about 5 years ago, and I set off to the store to claim my prize. I have been known to spend a good chunk of my time at bookstores, once I accidentally spent 6 hours in Chapters and didn’t even realize it. My frantic mother almost killed me, but I had just been browsing through all of the wonderful books and completely lost track of time.

I spent hours searching through every section trying to find the perfect book, it’s really a lot of pressure trying to make a decision like that. Or as Drew Barrymore put it in Ever After, “I could no sooner choose a favourite star in the heavens”.

Eventually after a lot of indecision and minor panic attacks, I came to the photography section, where I found this little gem. It’s possible I had been living under a rock, but I hadn’t ever really been exposed to Life magazine before, and I was completely blown away by the photographs inside. I bought it immediately, and have some of the images hanging in my room to this day.

Today I was creeping around on Amazon looking at Christmas gifts, and I happened into the section on photograph books. It’s taking every ounce of will power I possess to remember that I am supposed to be buying things for other people, not for myself, but there are a few I’ll be keeping my eye on until the new year.

    • xmas list

Posted at 6:43 pm by jasminedesirees, on November 27, 2013

I don’t really need anything for Christmas, I’m pretty much just so excited to see my family and be in Mazatlan again,  but I decided to make a list anyway just in case someone was trying to shop for me and was at a complete and total loss for ideas.

I actually do kind of need a new purse, mine was $20, I’ve had it for 3 years, and it is basically being held together by super glue and hope at this point, but I can’t find anything I like nearly as much.

The bag on my list is gorgeous, but I would probably get it and keep it in my closet for a few more months until my current one finally gasps its last breath. We’ve been through a lot together, even casually glancing at other purses feels a little bit like cheating.

    • zara

Posted at 3:39 am by jasminedesirees, on October 24, 2013

We have a Zara in SF, but the one in Vegas is so much better. I might find one or two things in the one near my work, but when I go into the one in the Fashion Mall on the strip, I have to limit myself to a dollar amount ahead of time and try to stick to it.

      I want everything in there.

T-shirts should not be a remarkable thing, but it’s really hard to find a good one. Usually they are too thick, or completely see through, or they hang on me weird and make me look pregnant.

These ones are just sheer enough to be breathable, they are form fitting but don’t cling, they have a nice wide neckline so I don’t feel like I’m choking, and they are long enough to be flattering. It’s probably weird to be this excited about a very basic clothing staple, but I am.

I’ve been wanting some lace trimmed black shorts for a long time, (probably since I saw this post, actually) and I figured they would be very easy to find, but they aren’t. The only pairs I’ve found have been incredibly expensive, but these were really cute and affordable.

It’s always hard for me to find button up shirts, usually they are either way too big and unflattering, or too tight and the buttons pull, plus they are usually see-through so I have to wear something underneath that adds bulk. This shirt is sheer but the colour is dark enough to keep it decent, and it fits perfectly without any gaping or pulling in the chest. Plus it’s green.

The only other green thing I own is a green silk mini dress with puffy sleeves. I was most likely drunk at the time of purchase, as I can’t imagine what else would have possessed me to snatch up that little number, which might still be the single most expensive thing I’ve ever bought. I force myself to wear it every St. Patrick’s Day as a humiliation exercise, and a reminder that if you feel the sudden urge to buy a Kelly green puffy sleeved satin dress, or other embarrassing equivalent, it’s probably a good idea to sleep on it first.

Even though it is still gorgeous out here, it’s mid-September and getting close to Fall. This time of year always makes me want to throw out everything I own and become one of those women who owns a trench coat and wears socks that actually match.

Here are a few things I’m creeping on right now:

Mango raglan sweatshirt, $56 / Wunder Under Pant *Luxtreme / Zara cami / James Jeans olive jeans / Steve Madden black equestrian boots

    • put your back into it

Posted at 10:38 pm by jasminedesirees, on August 20, 2013

I’ve always been a big fan of backless shirts and dresses, probably because I’ve never been able to wear them. Well probably not never, but certainly not since the age of about 13. Sadly, having your entire bra hanging out of the back of your backless shirt somewhat destroys the look.

Gabi from Gabifresh kind of inspired me, she is a plus size model and she always says that if she really wants to wear something, she will find a way to make it work for her. I think that’s great, and also really true. You can’t do something the way someone else would do it, you have to do it the way that you would do it.

So this is how I would wear a backless dress. I got some pretty heavy duty elastic from Michael’s, and my favourite bra. I cut off the back of the bra, leaving about an inch on each side of the cup to attach the elastic to, and sewed on 3 strips of the elastic on one side.

Then I awkwardly put it on/ figured out the delicate balance between having it stay up, and having it cut off all circulation. Once I decided on that, I sewed on the elastic to the other side at the right tightness, and voila.

It takes a bit of wiggling to get into it, but it’s actually really comfortable, and I think it’s pretty cute. I may not be able to go completely backless, but I figured out a way to wear what I wanted, and make it work for me.

My friend Paula is very artistic, she is a talented artist and photographer. She took these pictures of Derek and I:

She is currently battling thyroid cancer, and raising money while she gets treatment by selling beautiful hand-painted hats like these:

She does a lot of Hawaiian themed ones, but she is a very talented artist, and can do any design you can think of. She is very collaborative, working with you to develop the idea and make sure you are completely in love with the finished product.

You can order one for yourself here.

I always thought peplums were a very strange idea, until I tried one on. Now three of my favourite shirts are peplums, including this white one from Forever 21.

It might be because I am shaped like one of those little lego men, I don’t really have much of a waist, but I can pretend I do by adding a little frill. Sneaky.

    • twirl

Posted at 1:00 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 8, 2013

I bought this Billabong dress a few weeks ago, mostly because I loved the colour, but also because I secretly suspected it was one of those dresses whose soul purpose is to be twirled in.

It turns out I was right, and I had lots of fun twirling around on the beach the first time I wore it. It also happened to be an extremely windy day so I spent not an insignificant amount of time with the dress blown up over my head. Luckily there were no children around, just one little old man flying his kite.

I woke up last Saturday and I was SO excited for summer. It was a beautiful day, and it just didn’t feel right to be wearing black, as I do about 90% of the time. Instead I opted for the absolute brightest articles of clothing in my closet, and I don’t think it was a coincidence that I was so happy, all day.
Maybe I should buy more yellow? I might be on to something.

Some of the pictures are a bit dark, I’ve been playing around trying to figure out all of my camera settings, but they kind of reminded me of those days when you spend hours laying out on the beach in the blazing sun, and then you finally open your eyes and it’s so bright that all of the people and objects look really dark, and that made me even MORE excited for summer, so I put them up anyway.

      Billabong Tie-Dye shorts/ Element Shirt/  Roxy Sandles/ F21 Bustier/ AE Sunglasses

If this is the ugliest blanket you’ve ever seen, that’s OK. It was my first official “decor” purchase ever, I was 16 and I had just discovered Ikea. It was the same summer I painted my bedroom electric purple and my bookshelf fluorescent orange. My room was awesome.

I also brought snacks and entertainment. It was a really relaxing afternoon, and one that will hopefully be repeated with slight variations every possible opportunity until the end of the summer.

It is officially spring, according to the calendar, and according to a ground hog a few weeks ago, it should be getting warmer? I had a heated discussion with my sister about the ground hog thing, is there one specific ground hog that must see it’s shadow?

What do they do with him for the rest of the year? What if he gets eaten by a fox, and it can’t be determined if he saw his shadow or not, are we doomed to winter weather forever? And also, where is he? And how does anyone really know if he saw his shadow since he obviously can’t tell anyone?

These are the things I wonder about. Anyway, the point is, I want it to be spring. Actually, I want it to be so hot out that all anybody can do is lay around in their underwear wishing it was winter, but I’ll take what I can get.

It’s still pretty cold and dark here in the mornings, and it’s been raining. I am really tired all the time lately, and I can. not. get. out. of. bed, and I think it’s because of the weather. Luckily, I got myself a cute new umbrella to keep me dry, if not warm. Hopefully it will fare better than my last one which got crushed in a bus door on Haight St. when the Giants won the World Series.
