I’m not a very good photographer, that is just a fact. I love to take pictures, I used to go through a point-and-click camera every six months because I always had one in my purse, banging around, being stepped on, dropped, sat on, etc, because I never wanted to be without a way to take pictures.

That being said, I don’t technically know a lot about photography. After I bought myself a Nikon DSLR last January, I thought it would automatically improve my pictures exponentially, and it did, but also it just added more buttons and dials that I had no idea how to use, and I ended up taking pictures on Auto every time.

This year, I vowed that I would learn how to at least use my camera, so when I saw a Basic Photography class in Walnut Creek, I decided to sign up. The morning of the class I was so tired, and the urge to stay home and make a lazy breakfast with the boy was almost overwhelming, but I tried to remember my goal and summoned the motivation to get out of bed and go.

And I’m so glad I did. The class was with Source Photograhy, and the instructor, Gene, is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. We spent about an hour and a half talking about photography; light, ISO and aperture, and then the rest of the 3 hour class practicing and taking pictures.

He had lots of lenses that he was happy to let people borrow, and the best part is that once you attend a class, you can come back to that class as many times as you want for free, if you didn’t quite get something the first time, or just want to practice.

He lets people come in and use their studio to practice lighting and studio photography, even allowing people to bring in their own models, for free if he is in town. I learned so much in the short class, I know so much more about my camera and photography in general, and I feel confident enough to go out and practice on my own.

He also takes his student out on photography field trips, free of charge, where he’ll let you borrow his lenses and help you practice, so I’m going into the city with him this weekend to do some shooting.

I still have lots to learn, but at least I finally feel like I know what my camera can do so I feel like practicing will be a lot more fun, and less frustrating.

As soon as I found out we were going to Point Reyes, and I started telling people in Hawaii, the one thing I heard over and over again was that I absolutely had to go to Cowgirl Creamery, a local dairy and cheese making business. They are located right in downtown on main street, and their cheese is amazing.

I’ve gotten some from the ferry building in San Francisco, my favourite one is called Red Hawk, but I’d never been there before last weekend. We were cruising around Marin exploring some of the little towns, and we stopped at Cowgirl and one of the other cheese makers in the area.

We bought cheese and freshly made ice cream (vanilla bean, caramel truffle and bitter sweet chocolate) from Cowgirl, and the other place, The Cheese Factory, just outside of town had lots of cheeses out to sample and chilled wine for sale, and a beautiful picnic grounds with a pond to sit and eat.

I ate apples and Red Hawk every day for lunch this week, and I loved every minute of it.

A beautifully shot video of the ocean, with a beautiful message. If you love what you do, even if you never get rich and famous, you’ll live a life you will enjoy remembering.

This last week was kind of a strange one, I just couldn’t muster up the energy to do anything, and I’ve been really tired. The long weekend helped a bit, especially since we got out of the Bay and went for a day trip to the Marin county coast, touring around Olema, Bolinas and Point Reyes. It was kind of cold to be out at the beach, but it was so nice to just be outside and to be surrounded by trees.

One of the things I noticed when I lived in Honolulu was that sometimes I would just get really grouchy and lethargic, without a real reason why. Then we would jump in the car and leave the city, head to North Shore or Lanikai for the day, and I would instantly feel better. Being surrounded by people and buildings and cars all the time is just not great for me, and sometimes I need to  get away from all of those things and recharge.

We stopped for lunch at a cute little restaurant in Olema, did a bit of wandering around on the cliffs at Bolinas, and made our way to Limantour beach, which was gorgeous, but freezing. We finished off the day in Point Reyes, with a visit to the Cowgirl Creamery.

Posted at 9:01 pm by jasminedesirees, on February 11, 2014

One of my really good friends is getting married in Toronto on my birthday, which is really exciting. I get to go back to Canada, hopefully see some snow and also gorge myself on Canadian treats( I’ve already been Googling the Toronto airport to find out where the Tim Horton’s are located, I wish I was kidding) and also celebrate the marriage of one of my favourite people.

I am also VERY excited, because the company I work for has an office in New York. Since we’re going to be on the East Coast anyways, we are going to be spending a week there, sight seeing, creeping around and visiting friends.

I’ve wanted to go to NY for most of my life so I’ll pack as much into those few days as possible, but one of the things I would love to do while we’re there is go see a Broadway play, especially The Book of Mormon.

Tickets for their shows in San Francisco were astronomical, I literally looked it up and started laughing, so hopefully it will be a little more reasonable there. Getting tickets to that show would be the best birthday present ever (hint, hint).

Speaking of birthday things, I found these bracelets on a random website a few months ago, and almost ordered a couple for myself because they are so pretty, but decided to hold off because I think they’d be a great birthday present, for when people ask me every year what I want, and every year I still can’t think of anything.

81ogWNMvn5L._SL1500_Also, this backpack would come in very handy in the next couple of months. Hopefully it’s like Mary Poppins’ bag and I can fit everything I’ll ever need in here, but somehow I doubt it.

And, as usual, almost anything from Brandy Melville. Merci beaucoup.

Posted at 3:35 pm by jasminedesirees, on February 6, 2014

I just finished reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamotte. It’s a book about writing, why she does it, how she does it, and how she teaches about it. I really liked it, it was funny and informative, with lots of quotes and poems from other writers.

One of my favourite passages: “One of the gifts of being a writer is that it gives you an excuse to do things, to go places, to explore. Another is that writing motivates you to look closely at life as it lurches and tramps around.”

In it, she describes writing characters and plot as similar to taking Polaroid pictures, you think you know what you’re focusing on, and what you want the end result to be, but it’s only as you are writing and watch what develops that you really see what the image is that you’ve captured. And often, it isn’t at all what you thought it was going to be.

I had just read that chapter, and was walking down the street in San Francisco trying to describe the scene around me in my head, and take note of the little details that I usually breeze right by, when I noticed that someone had written LOVE on the back of a walk light that I walk by, just underneath, everyday. The sky was very blue, and I thought it would make a good picture, so I quickly snapped an image before dashing across the street, as the seconds counted down on the cross signal.

It was only afterwards, when I was looking at the image, that I realized there was an sticker of Henry Winkler, aka The Fonz from Happy Days, stuck on the light post beside it.

Posted at 4:35 am by jasminedesirees, on February 5, 2014

I’ve had my eye on some MAC Ruby Woo for quite awhile now. I have a weird obsession with red lipstick, even though I usually buy it and only wear it once because I don’t like the way it looks on me, or it feels weird on, or something.

This colour is pretty much the perfect pin-up red so even though it was kind of expensive, after creep Googling it in the middle of the night for a few months, I decided to go for it. I also bought lip liner, which is apparently non-negotiable (who knew?) and really like the result.

It’s definitely red, it’s kind of like being kicked in the face by the colour, but hopefully in a good way. I also really like the way it feels on, usually when I wear lipstick I spend the whole day licking my teeth to make sure I don’t have any on there, or just keeping my mouth awkwardly still and try not to talk because it feels not so much like a mouth anymore and more like a decoration.

But this one actually doesn’t make my mouth feel weird, and so far hasn’t ended up on my teeth even once. Not to say that it has amazing staying power, I bought it on a ladies shopping trip, and then we went for drinks and split a massive plate of fries, and I probably thought I looked cute, but one trip to the washroom shut that down pretty quickly.

The colour had disappeared from everywhere expect the very outside of my lips and I looked full crazy, and possibly like a vampire. But you need to re-apply  your lipstick after eating, that’s just what life is like, no matter how many 24-hour lip-stains promise you otherwise. Everybody’s got problems.

I started working on this painting a few weeks ago. It’s a self portrait. Clearly.

Also, I almost neverrrrr take selfies, some people can do it and do it well, but I do not have those skills. I try everyone once in awhile just to make sure they are still really bad, but generally flipping through the gallery of resulting failures is so disheartening I can feel the will to live ebbing away.

When I got my lipstick, I had also just gotten my hair done, and was trying to send a picture to my husband. My phone sometimes makes weird .gif images if I take several similar pictures in a row, and this was the result. It makes me laugh so I decided to post it. Be kind.

I came home sick from work yesterday, I had a really sore throat, which is probably strep as my manager helpfully pointed out. Being sick is not all bad though, I have been spending a lot of time sleeping, and watching heartfelt tear-jerking family dramas on Netflix (Stuck in Love was surprisingly good).

I’ve also been medicating myself with an industrial sized bag of Hershey’s kisses, and Lipton chicken noodle soup. The one that’s radioactive yellow and contains no actual chicken, that’s the good stuff. The boy tried to be sweet and surprise me with homemade chicken noodle soup with vegetables and real nourishment in it, but I wasn’t having anything to do with it. I’m endlessly charming when I’m sick.

We spent a really great week in Mexico with my family over Christmas and New Year’s, it was so nice just to relax. We had a bit of a harrowing experience right when we arrived, I was trapped in the tiniest elevator possible with 5 people and two giant suitcases in 100 degree heat, on Christmas day.

We weren’t sure how long it would take for someone to come save us, and it was a bit scary. We got out eventually, and after a few margaritas I pretty much forgot about it, although I refused to get back on the elevator for the rest of our trip.
