Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on May 10, 2017

Well, it’s been over 3 months since the first post in this two-part series, that’s quite a cliff hanger. I just finished my second semester of grad school, and I usually have to take a little break from this space during classes since there is so much else going on.

But, anyway back to our Big Sur trip. The drive down from San Francisco was absolutely stunning, we probably took twice as long to get there as we should have since I kept pleading to stop every 5 minutes, but every single view of the ocean and the coast was better than the last. Our windows were down, the sun was shining, and we had good tunes and peanut M&M’s. It was basically the perfect day.

      big sur

      big sur

      big sur

We were there for three days and two nights total, and we didn’t actually have a campsite booked when we left, since the place we wanted to stay at, Kirk Creek, is first come, first served. But it’s right on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean so I was hoping if we got there early enough, we would get a spot. It was a bit stressful, but we snagged one of the last sites.

The first day we kind of just crept around and explored some of the beautiful beaches in the area. As I mentioned about 10 times, I thought it would be really cold out along the coast in December, so I only brought leggings, combat boots and flannels. Needless to say, I looked pretty crazy at the beach.

      big sur

      big sur

I also didn’t realize that some of the little towns there are actually kind of upscale, so I got some strange looks when I walked through the parking lot in my shredded Jack Daniel’s t-shirt, but I won it playing quarters when I was 17 and I’ll never not wear it, no matter how ratty it gets.

We thought about making the trek to Hearst Castle since it’s only a little further down the road, but after two days of camping, and my aforementioned wardrobe woes, we decided to wait until next time when we might be a little more presentable (unlikely).

      big sur

      big sur

      big sur

There is almost no phone service there, so it was actually such a relaxing few days. We had a great time hiking and exploring, and then came back to our camp site to drink grapefruit beer, grill vegetarian sausages with extra mustard (for me) and smokies (for D) and enjoy the ocean view from our tent.

There is also a really pretty beach along the front of the campgrounds, but you have to shimmy down the side of a cliff using a rope that is older than I am to get there. It’s a bit tricksy, especially if you have a Twisted Tea in your hand, but still very do-able.

      big sur

      big sur

I had been hearing really good things about this podcast, so I downloaded a couple of episodes to listen to in the evenings, which I immediately regretted, since hearing about victims of brutal murders who were camping in Yosemite at the time (only a few hours away) was basically a guarantee that I would be up all night listening for the slightest rustle in the bushes outside. Did I mention there are quite a few raccoons in the area?

      big sur

      big sur

Overall it was an amazing few days, and basically my favourite part of Christmas 2016. I can’t wait to go back to Big Sur, and maybeeee spend one night sleeping here, in a human nest?

Since we ended up spending the whole Christmas break in California, we decided to sneak away for a few days to Big Sur. It was honestly even better than I thought it would be, I had been planning for subzero temperatures, but it was actually gorgeous out during the day, though it was a little chilly sleeping in a tent at night.

      hiking big sur

      hiking big sur

We spent our whole second day there exploring the different hiking trails, including Ewoldsen Trail and McWay Falls, which isn’t really a hike at all, more of a quick saunter down a paved sidewalk, but the view at the end is stunning.

      hiking big sur

      hiking big sur

      hiking big sur

      hiking big sur

Ewoldsen Trail took us about 3 hours total, but at the top there is the option to take a detour onto Waters Trail, which is about 200 yards straight uphill, but leads to the most gorgeous views of the entire coastline. We were pretty tired and sweaty by the time we got to the top, not to mention dehydrated since I hate carrying water with me when I hike, so we stayed at the top for almost an hour, just enjoying the view and recuperating.

      hiking big sur

      hiking big sur

The colour of the water is absolutely stunning, so we laid in the grass, soaked up the sunshine and listened to a little boy in the only other group at the top counting the whales surfacing along the shore. He got to somewhere in the 50’s before his parents dragged him back down the hill, although I’m pretty sure he counted the same whale more than once.

I would definitely recommend all of these trails, although they do get busy later on in the day. We got there at 8:30, and were one of the only cars in the parking lot, and we only saw a few other people on the trail, but by the time we got back to our car we were passing huge groups of people on their way to the trailhead, and people were parking for miles along the highway on either side.

I’m only a month late, but still wanted to share some snaps from the holidays in Mazatlan. We were actually just going to be in the Bay with D’s family, which I was kind of devastated about since I’ve never not been with my family for Christmas, but we ended up deciding to go last minute (as in Christmas Eve) and flew out on Boxing Day.

We’ve been going to Mazatlan since I was little, my grandpa has a house there, and it’s still one of my favourite places. Most of my fondest childhood memories happened there, so it’s fun to go back now and see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same, and it’s especially fun being there with my niece and nephew.

    • seattle: discovery park

Posted at 8:52 am by jasminedesirees, on November 23, 2015

We only had 3 days in Seattle, but we definitely made the most of them. On the morning before we flew out, we set off from our hotel, swung by Pike Place for breakfast, and then kept walking north along the water.

We wandered through the Sculpture Garden, and kept walking until we got to the end of the walkway, and into a strange labyrinth of warehouses and roads. We were trying to get to Discovery Park, but we ended up kind of getting lost and had to call an Uber to come take us the rest of the way, otherwise we would probably still be there.

We got dropped off at Discovery Park, just north of the city, and picked a random hiking trail (there are tons) to try to find our way to the lighthouse at the end of the point.

It was an absolutely gorgeous fall day, and the views on our hike were incredible. Right near Discovery Park there is a military base, and we stumbled upon what must be the most adorable Base housing in the history of the world.

As a former military spouse, I was violently jealous of anybody who got to be stationed there and live in such a picturesque location.

Eventually we found our way to the lighthouse (I kind of have a thing for lighthouses). The beach near the lighthouse was quiet and peaceful and was covered in so much driftwood that I briefly considered taking up whittling or furniture making. There were baby seals playing in the water along the shore.

By the end of that day, I had pretty much decided I was going to move to Seattle one day, and I called my husband to tell him so. It won’t be for a couple of years, but I can tell that the PNW and I would get along.

I suppose the argument could be made that I was there on the most beautiful, sunny weekend of the year, and I might not like it there most of the time when it’s grey and rainy, but that sounds like two-years-from-now Jasmine’s problem.

“Never say ‘no’ to adventures. Always say ‘yes’, otherwise you’ll lead a very dull life.” ~ Ian Fleming

I’m writing this from a beach house in Waianae, Hawaii. I booked my ticket Friday night, and left Saturday morning.

I struggled for a few minutes, over whether or not this was a practical thing that a normal, well-adjusted person would do, and then realized, I don’t care.

    • weekend in monterey

Posted at 8:39 am by jasminedesirees, on September 29, 2015

A couple of weeks ago I flew to Oakland and drove to Monterey for a weekend of beaching and wine tasting with some of my favourite ladies. We spent Saturday wine tasting in Carmel Valley (definitely recommend the wine trolley, as clearly nobody could drive) and then hung out on the beach for a bit.

      DSC_7934

It was very strange there were thousands and thousands of little fish washed up on the beach flopping around, it was really sad.

I’d never seen anything like that before, so a few of us spent about an hour racing around trying to throw as many as possible back into the ocean (alcohol may have been a factor) so they could live. It was a pretty fruitless endeavour, but we probably saved a few.

We looked it up, and apparently if there are whales or pods of dolphins in the area it can push some of the fish closer to shore for safety, but then they can get beached.

Monterey is such a cute town, there is so much history and the architecture is beautiful, but I’m pretty sure whoever designed the roads was drunk at the time, it is quite maddening to drive around, especially if you are driving a borrowed vehicle, that happens to be a stick, and also have no idea where you’re going (or so I’ve heard).

      DSC_7970

      DSC_7971

      DSC_7973

We did dinner, drinks and dancing on Saturday night, and dragged ourselves to the pier in the morning to drown our sorrows in salt water taffy and clam chowder (or fettucine alfredo in my case) before the drive home.

We spent more than an hour stuck in traffic, because that’s just what life is like, and we also didn’t find Clint Eastwood, which was the main goal of the trip, but it was a successful weekend either way.

A few more snaps from my time in Kauai. I’d been there once before, but only for a short weekend, so I was very excited to go back. It’s such a beautiful place, and I was so glad to be able to spend more time there so I could really explore the whole island.

Unfortunately, the more creeping around I did, the more I found that there was still a lot to see, so I’ll just have to go back again. How sad.

Also, if I ever go missing, I am definitely, absolutely not hiding out in that green house on the North Shore of Kauai, so probably don’t look there.

Posted at 9:17 am by jasminedesirees, on March 25, 2015

My birthday was a couple of weekends ago, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I’ve never really been a huge fan of birthday celebrations, it feels like a lot of pressure to get a bunch of people together so they can tell you that they like you, and people buy you presents and stare at you while you open them, it’s uncomfortable.

      san diego

      san diego

I usually would rather go do something fun instead, so we decided to take advantage of our proximity(ish) and head down to San Diego for the weekend. If you’ve been reading along for any length of time, you’ll know that we are quite the fans of spontaneous trips, and generally just jump in the car and figure things out along the way. It usually works out fine.

      san diego

      san diego

      san diego

In this case however, I forgot that I was born during what is generally considered to be spring break (also, the Ides of March, the day Julius Caesar was stabbed. Fun fact.) and also there were about four conferences in San Diego that weekend, so it was super busy.

      san diego

      san diego

We stayed in Yuma the first night, just to break up the drive, and had supper at this amazingly delicious restaurant called the River City Grill, it had an adorable little back patio, and I had spinach ricotta ravioli and it came with alfredo, pesto and roasted red pepper sauces all swirled together on the plate… sorry what were we talking about? It was realllllly good.

      san diego

      san diego

The next day we were up early to get back on the road. As we were driving into our hotel parking lot the night before I remarked that it was lucky we were so close to a Chevron, so we could fill up in the morning.

      san diego

      san diego

      san diego

But then we didn’t. And we were at least 30 minutes out of Yuma before we realized that we were basically out of gas, and the next gas station was at least 30 minutes away. It was a litttttle bit stressful, but we made it just in the nick of time, and didn’t have to spend any of our weekend stranded on the side of the road, which is generally a plus.

      san diego
      san diego

      san diego

We spent the day wandering around Point Loma, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and La Jolla, visiting different beaches, and stopping in at different bars along the way. Bali Hai had an amazing view, and allegedly the strongest mai tai that exists in the world (I think Smuggler’s Cove would beg to differ) and The Wood had an awesome roof top bar.

      san diego

      san diego

      san diego

Around 5 o’clock we started looking for a place to stay that night, only to realize that a lot of places were totally booked up, and the rest were around $300/night. We briefly considered driving up the coast to L.A., but we were too lazy.

We bought two pillows and a blanket, and found a dark residential street to snuggle up on, and slept in the car until about 4 a.m. It was really nice actually, it felt like we were back in Australia for awhile.

      DSC_6294

      DSC_6296

After that The Boy woke up and drove us to Ocean Beach to sleep on the beach so I could wake up beside the ocean on my birthday. We had a scrumptious brunch at the Fig Tree, hung out at the beach for awhile, and then started the drive back to Scottsdale so I could get a red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles.

It was a great few days, I love being near the ocean, and the general vibe of San Diego. We were already thinking SoCal might be the next place we move to once we’re done creeping around Arizona, but after this weekend, it’s basically been decided.

    • lombok: kuta

Posted at 7:57 am by jasminedesirees, on January 15, 2015

One of my favourite places in Indonesia was Kuta in Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta Bali). We took a mini-bus there for the weekend while we were waiting to see if we’d ever get our passports back.

It was about a 3 hour bus ride, we didn’t know anything about the place, and we had no place to stay, but I’d seen enough pictures of the amazing beaches there to know we definitely had to check it out (I have tons of pictures from all of the beaches, but they definitely deserve their own post).

      DSC_4112

      DSC_4166

The bus driver let us out in the middle of town, and we shouldered our backpacks and walked about 10 feet to the nearest homestay, where we got a room with wi-fi and breakfast for $5/night.

We were in Kuta Lombok in late October, so just at the beginning of the rainy season, but we had absolutely gorgeous weather. I’m pretty sure I got heat stroke, but it was worth it.

Because it was the start of the rainy season though, there were hardly any visitors there, often we were the only people in the restaurants or shops.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

Kuta is not much of a tourist town anyway, it’s very laid back with amazing surfing at many of the different beaches, and it’s off the beaten path enough that a lot of people don’t make it over there, but I saw a few signs for big resorts being developed, so that will likely change in the next few years.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

We had a great time creeping the town and exploring the surrounding area on a moped, playing with the baby goats that wander around everywhere, and eating at some amazing restaurants, we only had 2 days there but I would have liked to stay longer.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

The only thing I would mention as a negative thing about Kuta is that there are a lot of children there working to sell bracelets and blankets to tourists, and it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if there aren’t many visitors there at the time.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

It’s hard because you want to help them, but we’d traveled enough by then to know that it actually isn’t helping them to buy things from them on the street, because that’s just incentive for them to spend more time selling on the street to support their families, rather than doing kid things, like going to school.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

The kids would come up to you in restaurants, or while you were walking down the street and show you their goods, but if you expressed any interest you would be mobbed by any kids that were in the area, trying to get you to buy from them. I saw older kids beating up younger kids to get them out of the way, it was really sad.

      kuta lombok

      kuta lombok

There are a couple of restaurants we visited in Kuta that donated a portion of every meal sold to helping the kids so they no longer have to work on the streets. As I learned in Cambodia, if you want to help, there are ways of doing it that won’t end up doing more harm in the long run.

      DSC_4307

      DSC_4306

If you have a chance to visit Kuta Lombok, definitely do it, especially if you are a surfer. I promise, you won’t regret it.
