    • may I quote you on that?

Posted at 10:51 pm by jasminedesirees, on November 11, 2013

A few things that have been stuck in my head lately:

“Film noir gave us a term for the low-maintenance cheap-date type of woman, as personified by Ingrid Bergman and the other cool blondes. They were, in the gruff parlance, Class Acts. A Class Act does not bombard you with whimpering phone calls to the effect of why are you out with your mates watching the footie when you could be choosing sisal floor mats with me?

A Class Act does not take a split badly, or if she does, does so without so much as a peep. A Class Act is the silhouette disappearing into the night that you will no doubt remember-but will never talk to again. A Class Act will spend a lot of time alone, drinking spirits. A Class Act will never emerge from a local church in a shower of petals. A Class Act will never be a mummy, yummy or otherwise.

A Class Act will never have a husband who visit prostitutes. Forget I mentioned it.”- Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Love that book.

“Summer left and no one said a word.”- Matt Nathanson

“You are arguing that the fragile and rare thing is beautiful just because it’s fragile and rare. But that’s a lie, and you know it.”- The Fault in Our Stars

“Fuck that, I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong … I will never apologize. I stand here and I’m amazing for you, not because of you. I am not who I sleep with … I am not my weight. I am myself.”- Amy Schumer

“There is something absolutely divine — I mean, literally, the breath of God — in the ability to put someone else in your heart, to think of them first. But from the time of the greatest pornographer who ever lived, Shakespeare, we’ve demanded that love be something more. No, fuck Shakespeare — since the Song of Songs! And what happens is, the utter grandeur and magnificence of what love actually is gets overshadowed by this disappointment that it’s not the way we fantasized it should be.”- Jim, 55

Posted at 12:35 am by jasminedesirees, on November 9, 2013

I’ve been into burlesque for a long time now, I always find myself watching documentaries and reading books around it, so when I was creeping around on the internet and found out that there was going to be a burlesque show at the Fillmore, I was so excited.

After about 3 weeks of begging and wheedling my husband to the point where he began to lose the will to live, he eventually gave in and bought us tickets (he LOVED it, by the way). I loved it too, it was really fun to watch. The girls were beautiful, and amazing dancers, and a few of them were really curvy but still gorgeous.

They had different “numbers” including a Star Wars dance, and a Planet of the Apes dance where all the girls danced and stripped wearing gorilla masks.

One really neat thing was when they brought up some of the girls that had been a part of the show in the ’80’s, to talk to them and see if they had any advice for the new ladies, you could tell that it had been a really enjoyable time in their lives, and they were still a part of the act so many years later.

The troupe I saw were called the Black Heart Burlesque, definitely check them out if they are in your area.

      The Fillmore is so gorgeous

Another accidental gif from my phone. I don’t know how it happens, and I couldn’t make it take a gif if my life depended on it

I’m off to my first Sharks game of the season. This is about to be me:

Luckily I look amazing in Kelly green spandex

Nothing takes me back home as fast as the smell of a hockey rink, the snap of the cold and the sound of a blade cutting into the ice. The second I walk in the door I’m five years old again, and I’m eating old rink burgers (a truer delicacy has never been found) and fries with salt and vinegar, with gummy cobras for dessert, and then running around through the entire rink, under the bleachers and back to the zamboni playing tag with my friends.

I don’t think I went on a single date that wasn’t to a hockey game until I was 18, and let’s be honest, why would you want to go anywhere else? Plus they serve Canadian at the Shark Tank, and to be honest I’m not much of a beer girl, but I’ll take my Canada where I can get it, and I haven’t found anywhere else in California that serves it.

Plus he plays for the Sharks. Enough said.

      Dibs.

A few more picture from my trip. Ok a lot more pictures. I literally can not resist taking a billion pictures, it’s so beautiful there. Even when I lived there, my phone was just full of pictures of the places I saw every single day.

You would think it would get old, but it really doesn’t. Just when you think you’re immune, it sneaks up on you and takes your breath away again.

My little rat sister turned 21 last Tuesday, and I really wanted to be there to celebrate with her. One night in August after a lot of red wine I decided to buy a ticket to Hawaii without telling her about it. As it got closer, I started to get really nervous. What if she had plans or was not that excited to see me? I felt like she would be really excited but I’ve seen too many romantic comedies not to appreciate the true awfulness of a grand gesture gone wrong.

I flew in last Wednesday night and walked up to what I hoped was the right door (I’d never been to her place before). She opened the door, and absolutely did not recognize me at first. An instant later when she realized it was me she got a look of sheer terror on her face, like she thought I might be there to tell her some really bad news.

A second after that she must have remembered that it was her birthday and put the pieces together, because she was really excited and happy to see me, and I didn’t have to go sleep on the beach for the night.

I had such a fun weekend, I love hanging out with my sister, and her friends on the island are really fun. Hawaii is my favourite place in the world and always will be, I feel happiest and most like myself when I’m there.

Happy 21st birthday to my little rat sister today. We got off to a bit of a rocky start, sometimes I would eat your popsicles, sometimes you would try to stab me with a steak knife. You know, the usual.

But over the years I accidentally discovered that not only did I love you, I liked you a lot too. I have more fun with you than almost anyone else, and even though I miss you, I’m so glad you’ve adopted the islands and love them as much as I do.

I’m so proud of the tough, funny, smart chick you’ve grown into, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you, because I know it’s going to be amazing.

Also, I’m excited to finally go to the bar with you in ‘Merica and not have us both be named Jasmine.

    • colour me rad

Posted at 3:54 am by jasminedesirees, on October 29, 2013

One of the reasons I went to Vegas last weekend was to do the Colour Me Rad 5K with 2 of my best friends. I’ve done the Colour Run before, and to be honest, it was quite a bit better organized than this one, but the company for the Rad run was spectacular.

My hair was green for the rest of the weekend, and I’m pretty sure my lungs are still rainbow on the inside, but it was really fun. I put my “RAD” tattoo on my arm, and for the rest of the weekend people were like “RAD! I LOVE YOUR TATTOO” everywhere I went. There was so much enthusiasm for it that I briefly, after several martinis, considered making it permanent.

      Love them.
Another accidental .gif. I don’t know how this keeps happening but I love it.

    • perogies

Posted at 11:06 pm by jasminedesirees, on October 25, 2013

For Thanksgiving last week I made homemade perogies. I like to pretend it’s to share my culture with other people but mostly I just love perogies. They are kind of a pain to make from scratch and I can’t find anywhere to buy them here so I don’t make them very often, but when I do, they are glorious.

      I used this recipe.

      this
      plus this
plus four pounds of cheese= this
      this
plus a rolling pin and a drinking glass
equals these delicious morsels, plus carpal tunnel syndrome from working the dough and rolling it out
finished product and also proof that there is beauty in the world. Let’s be honest, I was too busy eating these to take a decent picture.

Luckily I made way too much bacon and had about a pound left over to nibble on to give me sustenance through this arduous task. Once the perogies are done, I boil them in hot water until they float, then saute them with butter and onions until they are brown.

Serve with sour cream and mushroom soup sauce (canned mushroom soup + water +microwave) and you can even add ranch if you are throwing all sense of caloric decency to the wind. My dad says if you eat too many perogies you will start to look like one. Which is probably true. But there are worse things you could look like, am I wrong?

    • zara

Posted at 3:39 am by jasminedesirees, on October 24, 2013

We have a Zara in SF, but the one in Vegas is so much better. I might find one or two things in the one near my work, but when I go into the one in the Fashion Mall on the strip, I have to limit myself to a dollar amount ahead of time and try to stick to it.

      I want everything in there.

T-shirts should not be a remarkable thing, but it’s really hard to find a good one. Usually they are too thick, or completely see through, or they hang on me weird and make me look pregnant.

These ones are just sheer enough to be breathable, they are form fitting but don’t cling, they have a nice wide neckline so I don’t feel like I’m choking, and they are long enough to be flattering. It’s probably weird to be this excited about a very basic clothing staple, but I am.

I’ve been wanting some lace trimmed black shorts for a long time, (probably since I saw this post, actually) and I figured they would be very easy to find, but they aren’t. The only pairs I’ve found have been incredibly expensive, but these were really cute and affordable.

It’s always hard for me to find button up shirts, usually they are either way too big and unflattering, or too tight and the buttons pull, plus they are usually see-through so I have to wear something underneath that adds bulk. This shirt is sheer but the colour is dark enough to keep it decent, and it fits perfectly without any gaping or pulling in the chest. Plus it’s green.

The only other green thing I own is a green silk mini dress with puffy sleeves. I was most likely drunk at the time of purchase, as I can’t imagine what else would have possessed me to snatch up that little number, which might still be the single most expensive thing I’ve ever bought. I force myself to wear it every St. Patrick’s Day as a humiliation exercise, and a reminder that if you feel the sudden urge to buy a Kelly green puffy sleeved satin dress, or other embarrassing equivalent, it’s probably a good idea to sleep on it first.
