    • christmas in mazatlan

Posted at 10:24 am by jasminedesirees, on January 27, 2016

I’m only a month late, but still wanted to share some snaps from the holidays in Mazatlan. We were actually just going to be in the Bay with D’s family, which I was kind of devastated about since I’ve never not been with my family for Christmas, but we ended up deciding to go last minute (as in Christmas Eve) and flew out on Boxing Day.

We’ve been going to Mazatlan since I was little, my grandpa has a house there, and it’s still one of my favourite places. Most of my fondest childhood memories happened there, so it’s fun to go back now and see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same, and it’s especially fun being there with my niece and nephew.

    • seattle: everything else part 2

Posted at 8:50 am by jasminedesirees, on January 13, 2016

I was creeping around in blog drafts folder yesterday and realized I never posted the last of my photos from Seattle, which is a shame because these were some of my favourite things I saw when I was there.

These rainbow crosswalks in Capitol Hill are what dreams are made of. I don’t understand why this isn’t mandatory everywhere. Even though it was late at night and absolutely pouring, I felt exactly like Rainbow Brite every time I walked across the street. And I mean exactly.

We were in Capitol Hill to visit the Unicorn Bar. It was such a cool space, even though we went on a Sunday night and we were the only ones in there except for the bartenders and a man in a gold lame dress.

We stopped off at Poquito’s for supper and had the absolute best strawberry margaritas of my life.

The next day, while we were on our way back from Discovery Park, we begged our Uber driver to make a couple of stops, so we were able to see the Fremont Troll, and the house that inspired the Pixar movie UP. Apparently they are tearing it down soon so I was really glad we were able to see it in person.

So that concludes my trip to Seattle, I really loved that city and started looking at jobs and places to live once I got home. We have probably a year and a half to two years left in Phoenix, and then who knows?

The one place I wanted to go to in Seattle that we never made it to was The Pink Door near Pike Place Market. The first night we were so tired from our exploring that we couldn’t have stayed awake for the Burlesque show (it’s not until 11), and Sunday night it was booked for a private event.

But that just gives me one more reason to go back, I suppose.

    • a beautiful mess

Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on January 8, 2016

Exciting news! I, a girl who never wins anything, except for that plastic container of cinnamon hearts when I was in fifth grade, won a set of Photoshop Actions from the DIY blog A Beautiful Mess right before Christmas.

I’m not amazing at Photoshop by any means, I’ve taught myself slowly for different jobs over the years, and we met a fellow traveller in Australia last year who gave us a copy of the program for our laptop (thanks Jake!) but I would definitely say I’m still a beginner. These Actions are cool though because you just have to pick one, and it automatically edits the image for you.

From there you can adjust the level, and turn certain layers on and off within the Action itself to play with it a little, but it makes it a lot easier.

Full confession, I have been writing for over three years on this blog, and I’ve never edited one. single. image. And not just because I’m lazy (although that’s part of it). It kind of feels like cheating to me? Anything can look amazing if it’s edited enough. I hate when I see a picture of something and it looks incredible, and then I see it in person and I’m like wait… why is this water brown?

But it’s nice to have the option, and I’m having fun playing around with these new Actions.

I picked an image from our trip to Cambodia last year, of a monk sitting on a building inside Angkor Wat and one of us snorkeling near Komodo Island to showcase some of the different options here:

    • the journey

Posted at 8:50 am by jasminedesirees, on January 6, 2016

I came across this poem just before the holidays, and I really liked the message, especially the last few lines.

My mom always says “You can’t control what other people do”, as in, it doesn’t do you any good to stress and get upset over the things other people do, the only thing you can control is yourself and your actions, so just make sure you are doing what you need to be doing.

Or to put it another way, I was talking to my brother while I was in Mexico and he said “My kindergarten teacher told us something on the first day of school that really stuck with me, she said ‘Just worry about yourself’ so that’s what I do”.

      One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
      though the voices around you
      kept shouting
      their bad advice–
      though the whole house
      began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
      at your ankles.
      ‘Mend my life!’
      each voice cried.
      But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
      though the wind pried
      with its stiff fingers
      at the very foundations,
      though their melancholy
      was terrible.
      It was already late
      enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
      branches and stones.
      But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
      the stars began to burn
      through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
      which you slowly
      recognised as your own,
      that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
      into the world,
      determined to do
the only thing you could do–
      determined to save
the only life you could save.

    • my life on the road

Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on December 23, 2015

      Gloria Steinem

I just finished reading My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem. It’s a collection of stories and anecdotes about her time traveling around the USA as an organizer, fundraising and public speaking to raise awareness for feminism and different political causes and campaigns.

It was really interesting, there are stories about JFK, Bobby Kennedy and MLK, but some of my favourite parts of the book were just little tidbits from random people she had met during her journeys. The point of the book is to encourage people to travel, to meet each other in person, and to get involved with their communities. Basically, to live in the now, as she says The Road forces you to do.

I have been hearing and reading about Gloria Steinem all my life, but I’d never read one of her books before. After this one, I’m excited to go back and read the others.

      Some of my favourite excerpts:

“I myself cried when I got angry, then became unable to explain why I was angry in the first place. Later I would discover this was endemic among female human beings. Anger is supposed to be “unfeminine” so we suppress it– until it overflows.”

“Now I know that both the palaces and the movies were fantasies created by Hollywood in the Depression, the only adventures most people could afford. I think of them again whenever I see subway riders lost in paperback mysteries, the kind that Stephen King’s waitress mother once called her “cheap sweet vacations” and so he writes them for her still. I think of them when I see children cramming all five senses into virtual images online, or when I pass a house topped by a satellite dish almost as big as it is, as if the most important thing were the ability to escape.

The travel writer Bruce Chatwin wrote that our nomadic past lives on in our ‘need for distraction, our mania for the new.’ In many languages, even the word for human being is ‘one who goes on migrations.’ Progress itself is a word rooted in a seasonal journey. Perhaps our need to escape into media is a misplaced desire for the journey.”

“She turns out to be a ninety-eight year old former Ziegfeld girl who is on her way to dance in an AIDS benefit on Braodway with her hundred-and-one-year-old friend from chorus girl days- something they’ve been doing since the tragedy of AIDS first appeared. Humbled by this response and looking for advice on my own future now that I’m past seventy, I ask her how she has remained herself all these years. She looks at me as if at a slow pupil. ‘You’re always the person you were when you were born,’ she says impatiently. ‘You just keep finding new ways to express it.'”

      Also, loved the dedication:

“This book is dedicated to Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957, a decade before physicians in England could legally perform a abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year old American on her way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said ” You must promise two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want do with your life.”

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I saw this so long after your death.

I’ve done the best I could with my life.

      This book is for you.”

    • autumn in new york: part 2

Posted at 9:09 am by jasminedesirees, on December 17, 2015

Part 2 of my visit to NYC in October.

On Saturday morning, we woke up early and moved out of the Empire to my friend’s aunts house on Park Avenue. It was the most adorable apartment I’ve ever seen, I never wanted to leave. It had so many rooms, but it wasn’t all modern and fixed up.

She had been renting it for decades, before Park Avenue was “Park Avenue” so it’s this quaint little place with long, sloping hallways and two whole rooms filled with books. My friends’ aunt travels all over the world doing volunteer work, so her entire apartment was decorated with things from her travels and pictures of her all over the world. Life goals, seriously.

Once we were all moved in and ready to go, we set out for the High-Line. I’d wanted to see that on our last visit but we ran out of time. Because it was a gorgeous October day, it was really busy, but I’m still glad we got to do it.

We walked the High-Line down to the Meatpacking District, where we stopped off at the Gansevoort Market to eat all the things. I could have spent hours in there, it was such a neat little space and every food stall looked more delicious than the last.

We spent the rest of the day wandering around, we did some shopping, went to Times Square to get show tickets from the TKTS booth and got caught up in a protest. The whole street was shut down by Black Lives Matter protesters, which was pretty crazy to see in person, there were so many people marching.

It was all very peaceful from what I saw, but the streets were lined with police, and there was a feeling in the air like something could happen, a heightened awareness. Nobody was on their phones or unaware, everyone was paying attention and talking to each other, which is rare these days. We stayed for a long time, but eventually we got hungry so we went to the Plaza for snacks.

There is a food court in the bottom of the hotel that had so many good desserts it was hard to choose. We ended up getting the most amazing hot chocolate of my life from a little stall in the back right corner. It was literally just melted bittersweet chocolate. I could feel myself getting sicker with every sip but it was so delicious I didn’t even care.

That night we went to The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, and it was amazing. My older sister and I used to listen to the soundtrack on road trips and sing our little hearts out, so it was really amazing to see it performed live. I especially loved the scene where he takes her down to his lair under the opera house, the floor comes apart and flickering lanterns and smoke comes up everywhere.

At the end of the show, the Phantom (James Barber) came out to thank the audience and even his speaking voice was breathtaking.

On Sunday morning we had planned to go to Brooklyn, but we stopped off at Rockefeller Center and ended up getting sucked into the shopping in the area (I blame you, TopShop) then going up to the Top of the Rock. We almost went to the Empire State Building, but it was so expensive (like $80/person) and I’d been to Top of the Rock before and loved the view up there so we did that instead.

We made a quick stop off at Junior’s for the best cheesecake in the world, before heading for the airport. It was so nice to spend time with my friend and explore new parts of the city. Just writing this post has made me so excited for my next trip, which should be in January.

      arizona

We bought a house! I’m not sure why we thought buying a house the week before Christmas when we aren’t even going to be home was a great plan, but here we are.

We got the keys last weekend (I was still in San Francisco) and started demoing right away.

Our goal is to have all of the flooring ripped out, the carpet replaced and the entire upstairs painted by Thursday because we have to move out of our rental and have it cleaned by Friday so we can leave for San Francisco on Friday night.

So my days recently look like this:

      1. Wake Up
      2. Work out. Only 10 days til the beach!
      3. Pack things, then realize I packed all the bowls and can’t eat breakfast
      4. Work all day
      5. Make something for supper, then head over to the new place
      6. Paint/do things for 3 hours
      7. Go home, shower, watch Homeland, go to bed

Which is really funny because previously after working all day I thought going to the library, which is like 3 blocks from my house, was too arduous a task to even consider.

I guess that’s why they say if you need something done, ask a busy person?

I’m really excited about the new place, the best part by far is the front porch, pictured above.

I plan on spending 98% of my time out there reading and drinking tea, and hoping I don’t get hit in the head by a golf ball.

A few more random snaps from Seattle.

We took an underground tour of the city, which was actually really interesting, and it started in a bar, which was useful since I am extremely claustrophobic and spending almost two hours underground would likely not have gone so well if I hadn’t been a little tipsy to begin with.

We rode the ferris wheel, visited the Space Needle, and had the most amazing breakfast at Biscuit Bitch.

I got a biscuit with jam and mushroom gravy, so I could try a couple different things. I don’t even like jam, and I wanted to put some of it in my hair to save for later.

The mushroom gravy was so good I just drank it after I ran out of biscuit. I would do it again, too.
