I’m trying to decide what I want to dress up as for Halloween, but so far I can’t come up with anything. I even tried doing word association to hopefully inspire a cool, completely never done before costume and in a flash of inspiration while looking out the window I screeched out, “OF COURSE! I WILL BE A TREE!”

So it’s clear that I’m going to have to take a different route to finding my costume. I saw this project the other day and have since been obsessed, even though it’s not even close to being the right season to plant more things, but then I started thinking, what if I covered MYSELF in gold leaf? Not my whole body, since there might be children present, but just gold leaf makeup.

I think it looks so gorgeous, and also kind of like you might have a contagious skin condition, so perfect for Halloween. The only problem is, it’s not really a costume, is it? When someone asks me what I’m supposed to be and I just say “Gold”, that might be odd. So now I’m trying to think of an actual costume I could make out of plastering my face with gold leaf.

So far I’ve come up with an Oscar, Goldmember, Queen Midas, or the sugar plum from the Nutcracker (although I’m not sure why since I feel like she would be white and silver?)

Here is my makeup inspiration so let’s see what I can come up with. Although hopefully with less gold dandruff.

A few weeks ago I was out wandering around the city and came across an art supply store. I ended up going in, and buying anything that drew my attention, even though I’ve only been to one painting class and have basically no artistic ability whatsoever.

I’ve been bringing them out and experimenting a bit lately and it’s pretty fun. Maybe I’ll never show them to anyone, and they are probably terrible, but maybe they will sit in my closet for years collecting dust and one day after I die someone will find them and the world will mourn that such an amazing talent wasn’t recognized until it was too late.

No need to look so skeptical, that sort of thing happens all the time.

Today was kind of a bad day. Nothing major happened, just nothing seemed to go right. Sometimes it just helps to have a reminder that there are still lovely things in the world.

I went to my first pottery class yesterday, and it was pretty neat. The instructor went over the basics with us, and then just kind of let us go, stopping to check in every once in awhile. We all got as much clay as we wanted so we were able to make lots of different things.

At first I made 2 bowls that looked exactly the same, and then a coffee mug that looked the same as both of my bowls. I think I was being a little bit hard on myself, I spent a really long time on each piece trying to get it perfect, but the people around me were just cranking through them one after another.

Our instructor was telling us how pottery is one of the most long lasting art forms, which is true, archaeologists are always finding pottery from ancient civilizations. Maybe one day, thousands of years from now, someone will find one of my pieces, and wonder what kind of society could have survived when it’s people were so bad at making pots.

I didn’t keep any of the pieces I made for the first class, I signed up for 3 classes so hopefully by the end of the third I’ll have improved enough to bring home a mug that will actually be able to hold coffee.

one of my pots will probably end up there eventually, let’s be honest
this is where the magic happens
      pre-glazing
      finished works
      before
      after
my first attempt at a plate. no bueno.

      Happy Friday!

It’s going to be a gorgeous weekend, and I’m pretty excited to sleep in and go for a nice long run tomorrow, and then to do some shopping.

But the thing I am MOST excited for is Sunday morning, I finally found a pottery class in the Bay that doesn’t cost your first born child to attend, and also offered weekend classes.

This is about to be me on Sunday, but with more Patrick Swayze (hopefully).

If you’re interested in taking a class, you can sign up with Create in Clay School of Ceramics, here. They offer classes 7 days a week, and it’s only $40 for a 3 hour class.

This week is so busy, I can’t believe how fast it’s going by. I also started reading Divergent last night and I’m kind of hooked so I just want this day to be over so I can get back to my book. Here are a few things I’m loving today:

It’s been a super busy week at work, today was the first day that I was actually able to take a lunch break, I blame you, Comic Con.

Today is a gorgeous day in the city and I was super hungry so I decided to go out for a walk and see what I could scrounge up for snacks. I’ve been working in the same place for a year now, but I hardly ever eat out at lunch so when I do I tend to just run to the same place every time. Boringggg.

While I was out wandering I came across an art supply store so I poked my head inside to look around, hoping that my lack of paint splattered overalls and thick rimmed glasses wouldn’t give me away as a complete art store newb. I’ve been wanting to take more art classes for a while now, but it never seems to work out, they are always during the week day? Who is taking art classes on a week day afternoon? Jealous.

I ended up buying a bunch of stuff that I don’t really know how to use, but I’m going to have lots of fun experimenting. The colours were so pretty, and I harbour a secret suspicion that I am actually a masterfully spectacular artist, and the only reason my talent has remained hidden for so long is my lack of access to pastels.

And I never did end up getting lunch.

I don’t know what I would make with this. Probably a snow man. But it’s beautiful.

My friend Paula is very artistic, she is a talented artist and photographer. She took these pictures of Derek and I:

She is currently battling thyroid cancer, and raising money while she gets treatment by selling beautiful hand-painted hats like these:

She does a lot of Hawaiian themed ones, but she is a very talented artist, and can do any design you can think of. She is very collaborative, working with you to develop the idea and make sure you are completely in love with the finished product.

You can order one for yourself here.
