I was only going to take 1 day off work for Nic’s wedding, and fly to Oregon on Thursday, but then I heard the slate of activities that were planned for the bachelorette party and I had to immediately change my plans.

We went on the Ale Trail, a local institution in Bend, which is a 16 person bar/bicycle that let’s you pedal/drink your way from bar to brew pub, all over town. It was so much fun, and also sort of a workout. I think if more workouts involved alcohol and a bunch of friends, people would always be in peak physical condition.

Our bar driver was a doll, and we ended up picking up a topless troubadour, whom we invited along because we thought he was a friend of our driver, but at the end of the tour we were informed that he was actually just a random homeless guy who came along for the ride.

As an added bonus, one of the breweries we went to was called the Boneyard. If you knew me during my time on the island, you will probably be as excited as we were, and will likely fully support our decision to buy matching Boneyard hats.

If you’re ever in Bend with some good friends and a few spare hours to kill, definitely check out the Ale Trail, more info here.

I heard from an old friend last night, and it was so nice. It’s easy to get busy with work and other things and not make as much effort to keep in touch, and before you know it, it’s been months or years since you’ve talked.

There are a lot of friends like that that I’ve made over the years, and then slowly, even though you still care about them and miss them, it gets harder and harder to keep in contact, as you know less and less about each other’s lives and actually getting on the phone and talking only makes that more obvious, and you start to doubt your friendship, and wonder if the other person even cares to hear from you anymore.

But then there are those people that you just click with, instantly. I don’t believe people only have one soul mate, and I don’t think that if you do have one, it necessarily needs to be romantic. There are just people in life that I have clicked with, sometimes honestly at first sight, and we’ve been friends ever since. And we’ll be friends forever because even if I never spoke to them again in my life, I know we’d still feel exactly the same way about each other.

Those are the kinds of friends that even if you don’t know the name of their dog, or even their address, you could see them after 10 years of not talking and pick up exactly where you left off, and those are the kinds of friends I am lucky enough to have.

A few weekends ago a group of us went wine tasting for one of my friends’ birthdays. It was a beautiful day, and we had lots of fun. We went in Livermore, to 3 different wineries, and I discovered that at a lot of the smaller vineyards, the people that work in the tasting rooms are volunteers, and they get paid in wine.

So I’ve definitely found my future career path. Out of all the wineries we went to, 3 Steve’s in Livermore was my favourite, it was across the courtyard from Tap 25, which had beer tasting for the boys, and the owners were very friendly and knowledgeable. They kept refilling our glasses and chatting with us long after our tasting was over.

Possibly as a direct result of this, I decided it would be a good idea to do beer tasting next door. I really don’t like beer, so in a cruel twist of fate, all of the beers I picked to try were sold out, so they would give me an extra beer to make it up to me, and I ended up with 8 or 9 glasses of beer to drink, and I didn’t like any of them so I had to keep foisting them off on some unsuspecting gents at the end of the bar.

It was a super fun day, and I’d like to go again immediately, and also every day thereafter.

Thanks to all of the Amerrrrcans and their celebrations, I got to go home for a few days last week. It was amazing to be at home, and I’ve lost two toes to frostbite, so right on schedule, then.

That one guy came with me, and I got to show him around my hometown and introduce him to some of my friends from high school. The whole weekend was filled with hockey, food, family and fun, we got to watch the Grey Cup, and also spent some time stuck with the truck in a snowbank so it was really the full Saskatchewan experience.
