    • pocket full of gold

Posted at 10:15 pm by jasminedesirees, on May 10, 2013

A few months ago, I saw a pair of sequin pocket shorts on Pinterest and decided I wanted a pair. Instead of buying some and saving myself hours and hours and possibly a hunchback in later years, I decided to make them myself.

I can not express to you how many hours this took, or how many times I pricked my finger, swore like a sailor and threw the stupid pocket across the room, but after almost 2 months (not constantly) of working on these, I finally finished them.

I really like them, thankfully, as I would force myself to wear them either way after all of the blood, sweat and tears that went into their making.

      Before
      Essential tools
we will be finding sequins scattered around our house for all of the foreseeable future
so close, but yet so far

i thought this day would never come

Allie Brosh, the hilarious and brave writer of the blog Hyperbole and a Half is back and posting again after almost a year and a half away. Hers is the first blog I ever read. She is incredibly talented, and I am so excited to hopefully see regular posts in my feed from her again.

      I love her ALOT.

It finally feels like spring outside, and one of the best parts is that there are lots of fresh fruits and veggies at the farmer’s market, instead of just that one guy with some old potatoes like there is in December.

I only had one mission last weekend, and that was to make pico de gallo. I planted cilantro, which I hate, and which I’m pretty sure hates me, only for this exact purpose. I tried to get everything I needed at the farmer’s market, and I was mostly successful except for the jalapenos, which I had to go to the store for, twice, since I forgot them the first time.

This was pretty easy to make, just a bit of chopping. The hard part was pacing anxiously around the house waiting for it to get cold in the fridge so I could eat it.

trust me, the feeling is mutual

It was a great snack on a 90 degree day, and the obligatory margarita accompaniment was very refreshing.

      Recipe here.

After a busy weekend in L.A., we stopped in San Jose on the way home to watch the Sharks absolutely demolish the Canucks 5-2. The Sharks are up in the series 3-0, so that’s too bad. I kinda wanted the Sharks to win, but I didn’t want the series to be over so soon. I absolutely love a Game 7.

Hockey has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My first love was Mario Lemieux, and my earliest memories are of my mom yelling at me to stop running around the rink with my friends during games or after a practice.

I’m pretty sure that every date I went on until I was 18 involved a hockey game, and Friday and Saturday night games were where we hung out with our friends every weekend.

Every Christmas if we are somewhere cold we have a family hockey game, which usually ends in tackling, shin whacking and blood, but is always really fun.

Canadian national anthem. You cried, not me.

I am so glad it’s finally May. For some reason, so many good things are happening this month, and I am so excited that it’s finally here. This weekend we are off to L.A. on a mini-roadtrip, and we are driving home on Sunday just in time to watch the Sharks play the Canucks.

Next weekend we fly to Honolulu to visit my sister, and Derek is walking in his graduation ceremony for his Associate’s degree. I am so proud of him, and so excited to be going home for 9 days. I am also possibly running a triathlon while I’m there, I’ve been training a little bit but we haven’t signed up officially. In true Spearing fashion, we are waiting until the very last possible second to enter. We are slightly indecisive.

We fly home on the 19th (I am sad to be missing Bay to Breakers, but it’s definitely going to be worth it) and the next weekend we are flying to Vegas to see my other sister. We haven’t seen each other since Thanksgiving, and I am super excited to spend the weekend with her and her husband.

On top of all of our traveling, I also got a promotion at work, and I start my new job on May 6th. It’s definitely going to be a whirlwind month, but those are my favourite kind. I’m feeling very lucky and grateful for all of the good things in my life at the moment, and I can’t to see what the rest of the summer holds.

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to attend the wedding reception of some of our friends from Hawaii. I met them on the island, but they are from California, and they held a small reception at the Purple Orchid near Livermore.

It’s a bit out of the way, I thought perhaps they were luring us out into the woods to kill us, but once we arrived it was the most adorable little spot. The new owners bought it a few years ago when it was falling into disrepair, and they were able to get some help from Hotel Impossible (a TV show) to get it fixed up.

Sadly that night my phone completely died, it is possible I dropped it into my champagne glass without noticing. Some of my pics were saved, but all of the ones of Derek, and Derek and I were gone, which was disappointing because he cleans up real nice.

Today I am wishing a happy birthday to my beautiful, wonderful mother. She is constantly setting goals for herself, and works hard to achieve them, never taking no for an answer. She insists on having a good time no matter what she is doing, and she is always taking care of other people.

Whether she is getting her motorcycle license, running a marathon, or hiking the Grand Canyon, she isn’t afraid to try new things. Also, she is probably the best dancer I know. I remember when I was little, I couldn’t wait to grow up and get big so that I could party with her, I always thought her and my dad were so much more fun than any other adults I knew.

So happy birthday Billie Jean, thanks for being so adventurous and feisty, and showing us all that anything is possible with dedication, a positive attitude, and the promise of a margarita at the finish line.

    • love letters.

Posted at 3:56 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 30, 2013

I just came across moreloveletters.com, and it is pretty lovely. It is a community of people that write love letters to someone who needs one. You can nominate someone in your life who is having a rough time, and within a few days, they will be getting a huge dose of love from people all over the world.

They also have a section called “found love letters”. Apparently there are people out there sneaking around hiding love letters in nooks and crannies all over the place, and maybe when you need it the most, you can find one.

People take pictures of their found love letters and send them in to the website, and describe where and how they came across it. Some of the reactions are so sweet, and it’s nice to think of someone who is struggling finding one of these notes and knowing that somewhere in the world there is somebody who cared enough to take the time to hide a secret love letter.

Maybe this weekend I’ll give up a few minutes of soaking up the sun, and take the time to spread a little love around.

    • cauliflower cream

Posted at 3:59 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 29, 2013

I’ve been seeing recipes for “cauliflower substitutes” for a few months now, but I’ve always been very skeptical. The other day I saw this recipe for cauliflower Alfredo sauce, and I had no choice but to try it.

A frighteningly large percentage of my life is spent wishing I was eating Alfredo when I’m not, so I figured if there was even a slight chance this would work, it was worth a try.

Let me tell you, it was delicious. It was a bit lighter than alfredo sauce obviously (which is probably the point) and a lot less thick, but it was super creamy and delicious. It was a bit time consuming, and there is a real risk of 3rd degree burn as you transfer the cauliflower and broth into the blender, but once you’re past that part it’s a breeze.

I only used about half a head of cauliflower and it made tons. We had enough for a huge batch of alfredo for supper that night, and enough to save in the fridge for supper later in the week. I made it with quinoa pasta, but any pasta will work.

One tip, do not skimp on the black pepper, it’s very important.

please sir, I’d like some more
