A few days ago in San Francisco there was a protest in front of the Union Street Victoria’s Secret store. Women of all shapes and sizes showed up in their bras and undies with signs to protest the lack of body diversity displayed by the store, and by other retailers as well.

I think it’s pretty awesome that these people were brave enough to show up and stand up for what they believe in, and to do it in such a fun and bold way.

It’s not just the lack of body diversity shown by the models that’s a problem at Victoria’s Secret. I worked there for a few months (I was a bra specialist, NBD) and I always thought it was very strange that a company claims to be “all about bras”, that they don’t carry a more diverse range of sizes. I was constantly having to turn people away that were willing to come in there and spend $50 to $100 on one bra, because we didn’t carry their size.

And these were not all very large women either, as bra specialists, we were required to try on all the bras that come in so we could be familiar enough with them to sell them, and most of the bras that they sell didn’t fit me either.

Victoria’s Secret has an opportunity to be a really strong advocate for all women, to make them feel beautiful and sexy, and also to tap into a whole new market for their products, women who are constantly searching for beautiful, comfortable bras that fit properly, and they are really missing the boat.

      Full story here.

Tonight I’m going to see my favourite band, Lucero, at the Fillmore. I bought tickets in February, and have pretty much had to forget about it because whenever I think about it I get too excited to do anything else.

I don’t remember the day, but I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard them. I was sitting on the chair at my desk in our first apartment in Hawaii, and my roomie’s boyfriend was downloading random songs, and came across one of their albums.

As soon as he started playing Here at the Starlight, I got a tingle from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. I loved them immediately. By the time I had listened to My Best Girl, and Night’s Like These, it was over for me. That was about 4 years ago, and since then they have gotten me through every sadness, every heartbreak, homesickness and sleepless night, and every rainy day.

When I moved to California, and I had no friends, no job, no family and I missed the island so badly that I couldn’t sleep at night, I would put Lucero on my iPod on repeat, and let Ben sing me to sleep. It’s kind of funny how much of an effect you can have on someone else’s life without even knowing it.

Here are some of my favourite Lucero lyrics:

“She had a weakness for writersAnd I was never that good at the words anyways”- Night’s Like These

“And I’ve only got this one wish, that I was good enough to make you forget the only boy who ever broke your heart”- Night’s Like These

“The light from the disco balls surround us with stars, and I looked like trouble right from the start. you told me so, yeah you told me so.”- Slow Dancing
“Life is short, in spite of your plans, so tell the girls they’re pretty while you can.”- Drink ’til We’re Gone
“Well it’s plain to see you’re a dangerous thing, with those hips, those lips, and those eyes, and it’s lucky for me that I like being free or I might try to make you mine.”- A Dangerous Thing
“well I’m a sucker for some pretty eyesbut they’re going home with some other boy tonighthell, i guess I’ll be fine’cause there’s one girl whose all mine.”- My Best Girl

“Now we got to the game just a little too late, spent our early days, we spent our early days just fucking up. We ain’t nobody’s darlings, we ain’t nobody’s boys.”- Nobody’s Darlings

My parents and brother came in last night for a quick stop over on their way to Hawaii. It was so nice to see them. We had a really nice dinner at the Waterfront Restaurant in the city, and then checked out the new light exhibit on the Bay Bridge.

I came home from supper to find this package from my sister:

A cute new shirt and shorts, VS bikini bottoms, cookie corner cookies, kettle corn, Benefit bronzer, Diorshow mascara, new perfume, a hand drawn picture of me that time I was in a movie, and lots of other goodies. One of the best and most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever gotten.

Last weekend I attended the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. It is basically small local businesses that make or design things like clothes, art, cards, jewellery, etc and they all come together to sell it. Many of them have Etsy shops.

It was really neat to see all of the different things that people make, and it made me feel a bit bad about myself that I haven’t quite learned how to macrame myself a pair of jean shorts, but mostly it was just very impressive, it was a bit of a contact high being around all of those talented, creative people.

Even though there was tons of beautiful jewellery, I didn’t end up buying any, there was almost too many pieces I liked and I couldn’t narrow it down to just one.

I did buy this super adorable card, that I might frame and keep by my bed because it makes me happy whenever I look at it.

I bought some gorgeous eyeshadow from Calico, which I didn’t need but the colours were so beautiful I wanted to paint my whole body with them.

They give you a “positive thought of the day” if you buy something from them, this was mine.

I bought this charcoal and tea-tree oil soap for the boy, it smells amazing, and I’m sure he won’t be surprised to find a lump of “coal” in his stocking.

I haven’t decided if he’s been naughty or nice

And I also bought this shirt. I literally saw it from across the room and we loved each other immediately. They didn’t have it in the style I wanted but I went home and ordered it immediately afterwards, and I am impatiently checking my mailbox every day waiting for the moment we are together again.

Last Saturday we went to see The Nutcracker at the San Francisco Opera House. It was pretty much my dream date, I got to dress up, eat chocolate truffles, drink champagne and watch ballet dancers in glittery costumes twirling around.

The opera house was gorgeous, it was all marble and gold leaf everywhere. I almost took a picture of the bathroom vanity because I couldn’t remember the last time I had been in a public place with actual faucets, instead of the automatic kind, but I decided whipping out my camera in a public bathroom was at least awkward, or possibly ground for arrest.

We had planned on eating supper before the show, but we weren’t very hungry and decided to just get drinks and dessert.

The ballet was beautiful, somewhere around the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy I finally decided that what I want to be when I grow up is a ballet dancer. I know they have adult classes in the area, I am sure I could be dancing the part of Clara by next Christmas. Probably.

A few of the things make me happy right now:

Cadbury Dairy Milk: I’ve eaten a lot of chocolate. I eat chocolate almost every day. And out of all of it, the cheap and very expensive kinds I’ve tried, this is by far the best. You could easily devour the entire thing in a matter of minutes. Which I never do. And certainly not yesterday since I will be spending the better part of the next 2 weeks in a bikini. Obviously.

      Sunset over the bay:

Christmas lights: I got home from work last Friday to find a twinkly surprise over my garage door.

It’s nothing too crazy, but we are the only ones in our whole neighbourhood that put up any lights at all so we won the Christmas decoration battle, if only be default.

But we have a bit of work to do if we want to beat these guys:

      Also, this.

Last night we went out for supper in SF, then got Starbucks and went for a long walk before we went skating at the Embarcadero center.

      SF at Christmas

Skating was really fun, although they had “hockey skates” and I use the term loosely. They had absolutely no edge, and I kept waiting to crash head long into the boards and take 4 or 5 unlucky souls with me. I managed to stay upright but I really missed my picks, and regretted my decision not to bring my skates to California with me.

“A good skater can skate in anything”- Just Friends
      Trying not to die

Here are few of my favourite things about this time of year:

      • skiing, skating, tobogganing, etc.
      • coming in out of the cold and warming your hands on a steaming mug of hot chocolate (see above)
      • it seems like people are nicer to each other, and go out of their way to help even complete strangers
      • finding the perfect gift for someone that you absolutely know they will love (extra points if it’s on sale)
      • all of the cookies (especially these), and other delicious treats
      • there is always an excuse for a party, cute new dress, or cocktail
      • holiday movies, especially Home Alone, and Love Actually
      • when you’re wrapping presents and you manage to cut all the way across the wrapping paper in one smooth line, without stopping and without ripping it. Success.

Things that are making me happy right now:

I am obsessively reading Game of Thrones on my Kindle, I’m on the 5th book and I only started them last month. I watched one episode of the show, but the characters didn’t match what I had in my head (I’ve decided Jon Snow is probably really, really, ridiculously good looking) so I’ve decided not to watch anymore until I’m finished with the books.

This is what Jon Snow looks like in my mind.

This glue pen which allows me to transform even the most mundane of writing tasks into sparkly, glittery wonderment. I have been using it to make my own birthday cards because I find Hallmark (and other brands) of greetings cards to be expensive, cheesy and pointless, and it is not uncommon for me to spend an hour in the card aisle in a cold sweat trying to decide which card best surmises how I feel about my husband’s mother’s best friends’ dog walker’s former room mate.

A Starbucks Mocha on a rainy, cold San Francisco morning. I wish it was an Espresso Truffle, but you can’t have everything in life.

My eggnog candle, it smells so good I want to eat it.

Last weekend we headed into the city for Red Bull Flugtag. I’ve been seeing commercials for it forever, and I was so excited to finally be there to see it. Sadly, we didn’t show up the night before and camp out so we couldn’t get anywhere near close enough to see all of the action.
Luckily, it was a gorgeous day, so we found a waterfront cafe and had brunch and mimosas instead.
“The Golden Gate Bridge is red? WTF!”- My lovely sister Courtney
Luckily you can’t see it in the picture but this was about 5 minutes after I dropped a chicken kebob on my skirt

One of the great things about being in this city, is there is something different around every corner. We are always looking for new places to eat lunch, it’s nice to get out of the office and spend time outside especially when the weather is nice.

Last week we were walking to get food, and we turned a corner and found this beautiful park beside the Yerba Buena Center. It has waterfalls, flowers and tons of beautiful green grass, and it is very peaceful, even when there are a lot of people around. It’s the kind of place that makes you wish you had a frisbee, or a book to plop down and read under a tree.

It’s a perfect little oasis in the middle of all of the brick and concrete.
