    • run like a girl.

Posted at 7:41 pm by jasminedesirees, on July 17, 2013

This video is a great reminder of how far we’ve come. Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to enter the Boston Marathon. During the race, she was physically attacked by one of the race organizers for having the audacity to participate in a “male” sport.

She went on to become an advocate for women’s athletics, and she opened the door for millions of women, including myself, my mom and my younger sister, to be able to participate in marathons, and other running events.

I saw this the other day, and I had to share it. This doctor used a genetically mutated form of the HIV virus to attack the cancer cells of a little girl who was on the brink of dying from her disease, and it worked.

She is in remission, and living the life of a normal, happy kid, thanks to this bold and exciting new treatment.

Things have been super crazy at work this week, I forget what Derek looks like since I haven’t seen him in ages.

Even though it’s busy, I really feel like I’m learning a lot, and am taking on a bunch of new projects so it’s really exciting. You can tell you like your job when you really don’t notice you’ve been at for for 12 hours without taking a lunch break.

As ever, when things get hectic, there is one thing that gets me through, and that is this video.

      Enjoy.

Allie Brosh, the hilarious and brave writer of the blog Hyperbole and a Half is back and posting again after almost a year and a half away. Hers is the first blog I ever read. She is incredibly talented, and I am so excited to hopefully see regular posts in my feed from her again.

      I love her ALOT.

    • six word memoirs

Posted at 7:02 pm by jasminedesirees, on March 14, 2013

“If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter”- Blaise Pascal.

It is actually much harder to write something in a few words, than it is if you are given all the words in the world. If you only have a few words, each one is that much more important, because there is a lot more room for misunderstanding or misconstrual.

A few months ago, I read Not Quite What I Was Planning, a collection of 6 words memoirs inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.” I think back to it every so often, trying to decide what my 6 word memoir would say, but it’s very hard to commit to something like that, it feels so final.

Although, really, your 6 word memoir would just be a snapshot of that time in your life, and would change in the future certainly, and could change almost as soon as it was written, because even if your experiences haven’t changed, your perspective might have.

So as of right now, this minute, my six word memoir is: Learn, travel, try; always missing something.

Just a few lovely things I’ve seen while I was out and about recently:

On Venice Beach: Love Making in Progress, Do Not Disturb Creation. Legitimate.
      Beautiful graffiti portrait
      On an LA apartment building
I walk by this heart every day on my way to work. I always wonder who put it there, and why.

    • rock your body…

Posted at 6:10 pm by jasminedesirees, on January 9, 2013
I’ve always been an active person, I ran my first competitive race when I was 5 years old. I’ve done track, cross country, volleyball, swimming, yoga, Pilates, I even took a jazz dancing class for a couple months a few years ago during a particularly interesting phase of self discovery.

After the Las Vegas Rock ‘n Roll Marathon with my momma
I’ve played almost every sport, tried almost every machine at any gym, and even, for one particularly heinous hour, took a spin class. I’m pretty sure hell will be just like that. Never again.

I tried Crossfit for a few months this year. The workouts were awesome and challenging, I get a serious high from the competition and intensity, and I could see a real difference in my body after only a few months.

Even though I liked it, I decided not to go back after awhile because it was very expensive, and most of the workouts (except for the really heavy weight lifting, which I didn’t like anyway) I could do at home, for free, and on my own schedule.

Then a few months ago, a friend told me about BodyRock. It’s a daily 12 minute work via YouTube video out that you can do with minimal equipment, in your own home. The workouts are different every day, they are intense, and challenging, but you can do anything for 12 minutes, right?

The only problem is, they keep switching up the format. When I first started checking them out, it was just a 3 minute video, zoomed in on the BodyRock hosts while showing the highlights of the workout. It was kind of hard to see what they were doing, and it was difficult to push myself to that intensity, while I was stopping to see what she was doing the whole time.

Then a few weeks ago, I checked back in, and they had a new format. It was the full 12 minute workout in real time, usually with an ab or leg bonus video, and the trainer went through the entire video with you, and actually did it with you, screaming at you and pushing you to go faster and work harder.

I was completely obsessed, and I went back every day for almost 2 weeks, because it was an awesome workout, and there were new videos every day. It was like having a free personal trainer on duty any time you wanted.

A personal trainer who looks like this.
Sadly, after those few weeks, they switched up the format again, and went back to the shorter videos, just demonstrating the workout for you and letting you do it on your own, which you can get from tons of other sites and fitness sources.

I’ve stopped doing it since then, just sticking with running, and my week day elliptical and body weight resistance training, but I check back in with them every now and then just in case they decide to switch up their format again.
