    • hollywood forever

Posted at 8:01 pm by jasminedesirees, on May 20, 2013

While we were in L.A. last weekend, I finally made it to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I’ve wanted to go there for years, becuase they show old movies there at night and it just seemed like a really cool and unique place.

They only show movies a few times a month, and so far we haven’t been there on a weekend when it was happening, but hopefully one day. It was probably weird of me to take pictures of a graveyard, but it was so beautiful and peaceful there, and it’s really a historical landmark, this beautiful, sprawling old cemetery in the middle of Hollywood.

You can learn more about it, here.

This morning we had a great big breakfast and relaxed, then went to rent a car for the rest of the week.

We went to SSG for lunch, I had the BBQ chicken plate with two peanut butter temptations for dessert.

After lunch we went to sandy’s beach. It’s so beautiful over there but a bit windy so the waves were huge.

Sandy’s has a shore break so it’s pretty dangerous, and it’s awesome to watch the body boarders getting rolled in the surf.

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to attend the wedding reception of some of our friends from Hawaii. I met them on the island, but they are from California, and they held a small reception at the Purple Orchid near Livermore.

It’s a bit out of the way, I thought perhaps they were luring us out into the woods to kill us, but once we arrived it was the most adorable little spot. The new owners bought it a few years ago when it was falling into disrepair, and they were able to get some help from Hotel Impossible (a TV show) to get it fixed up.

Sadly that night my phone completely died, it is possible I dropped it into my champagne glass without noticing. Some of my pics were saved, but all of the ones of Derek, and Derek and I were gone, which was disappointing because he cleans up real nice.

    • adventures with my parents

Posted at 3:31 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 17, 2013

My parents came in to visit us for a couple of days last week, and it was really fun showing them around. I tend to try to pack as many things as possible into when they visit, I figure if they have lots of fun they are more likely to come back and visit sooner, right?

It was my dad’s birthday so my mom got us all tickets to the Sharks game (they lost, damn you Burns) and then we went to Capitola and tried almost every margarita on the boardwalk. We had supper at a really great restaurant in Aptos called Cafe Rio, I highly recommend it. I don’t even eat seafood, but I ordered salmon (since I’m trying to be more adventurous) and it was A.MAZ.ING.

After that we went wine tasting, had lunch at BJ’s and did some beer tasting, and then did some sight seeing before we went to a little town called Port Costa and went to The Warehouse Cafe, which is now definitely top 5 for my favourite bars in the world, and is certainly my favourite bar in California.

It’s a very eclectic mix of people and decor, they have a life sized polar bear, a bartender named Gina who is a crazy Italian in the most endearing way possible, and beers from over 450 different countries, and they ONLY serve doubles. All of this located right on the bay, in a run down old shipping warehouse that you can wander around in for ages and continue to find something cool around every corner. As my Dad said, “It’s like a place from a different time.”

We finished up with supper at Texas Roadhouse and then went home to eat the banana cream pie I made for my dad’s birthday cake. It was a really wonderful couple of days, and I can’t wait until they come back again. Sadly, my phone broke right before they got there, so I didn’t get to take as many pictures as I would have liked, but I did get a few.

      ominoussss
      love them
I don’t know if I could drink all of that, but I would like the opportunity to try

    • meet up

Posted at 2:40 pm by jasminedesirees, on April 5, 2013

A few months ago I came across a website called Meetup.com. The basic premise of it is that it allows people to find other people with similar interests, and form groups around those interests.

There are so many different groups for people that love everything from reading, to chocolate, to wine, to motorcycles, to pub crawls, running, biking, photography, languages, etc. If you are looking for a group, chances are it already exists.

I thought it was a really great idea, especially in bigger cities, or places like the Bay Area where so many people are transient, and are looking to meet some new people. I immediately signed up for about 10 different groups, one for photography, one for running, a girl’s night out club, a book club, and a chocolate club. Obviously.

I’ve met a lot of really fun, really nice people since I moved here, but most of them live in the city, and it’s a bit of an ordeal for me to get home from the city after 8:00pm, so I figured it would be nice to meet some people my age, with similar interests, that live over where I live.

I’ve been to a few meets up so far, I was pretty nervous for the first one, it was at a girl’s house in Oakland, at night, and I was going there alone, so basically the set up to every scary movie that’s ever been made. It turned out to be really fun, I met a lot of nice girls, everyone brought something good to eat, that’s how I was introduced to the amazing-ness that is the flour-less chocolate cake from Tartine, and there was lots of wine.

Last weekend I met up with some ladies for a Sunday morning brunch/ book club. I was a bit younger than the rest of the ladies there, but we had some really interesting conversations, and it’s pretty neat how the most unlikely people can be brought together by the shared love of a good book. Also, I ordered eggs benedict and a mimosa. It was a good day.

I haven’t been to meet ups for all of the groups I’ve joined, a lot of the time the date, location or times don’t work out, but so far it’s been a great experience. I’d like to keep finding new groups and going at least once in awhile because I really like to meet new people and try out different activities, especially when I’m a little bit scared to do it.

If you’d like to learn more about Meet Up, or find some groups in your area, check it out here.

On our trip to Half Moon Bay this last weekend, we stopped by the Half Moon Bay nursery to see if they sold bonsai trees. They didn’t have what we were looking for, but it is the most adorable place in the world. I wanted to move in.

These remind me of Dr. Seuss. Thing 1 and Thing 2.

They were also growing plants out of hanging coconuts

I finally made it to Half Moon Bay last weekend, I’ve been wanting to go since we moved here. It was so beautiful, and it was a gorgeous day. We didn’t get to the Ritz Carlton or any of the little shops, we literally plunked ourselves down on the beach and laid there for hours. I did put my toes in the water, it was absolutely freezing.

I could spend every second of my life beside the ocean if I could.

“She would be half a planet away, floating in a turquoise sea, dancing by moonlight to flamenco guitar.”- White Oleander.

I like that you can see my dress in these 🙂

It was such a beautiful day

We had a really wonderful long weekend in LA, in addition to the Hollywood Sign hike, we got to see some of Derek’s family, spent a day at Universal Studios, and did some sight seeing and spent some time at the beach.

There is so much to do there, and we were only in town for a couple days, so I’ve already started planning our next trip which will hopefully include a movie at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a tour of the WB studios, and brunch on the beach.

How excited are you to be at Universal Studios?
      I think I win
You can’t have everything in life
      Don’t worry, it’s not a real shark
      Gabrielle’s house from Desperate Housewives
      Whoville
It’s probably not a coincidence that Whoville is directly behind the Bates Motel
      it was mutual
      Starstruck
      Venice beach
The single greatest tree in the history of the world
      art on Venice beach
      date night in Long Beach
      free front row tickets
I touched his hand, we’re basically best friends
