A few months back, I was lucky enough to make a trip to northern B.C. to visit my best friend. Unfortunately, it was for sad family reasons, but I’m glad I could be there for her, and also see this amazing place for myself, since she has been trying to get me to visit for years.

It’s not an easy place to get to though. I flew from Phoenix to Seattle, Seattle to Bellingham, where I was picked up by her and her husband. We drove across the border into the GWN, and spent the night at her mom’s house in Fort Langley, B.C.

      DSC_8756

The next morning, we were up bright and early to walk around Fort Langley a little bit (it’s such a neat little town, their town hall is used in a lot of movies and TV shows, incuding Once Upon a Time and Supernatural), and eat amazing scones from Blacksmith Bakery.

      british columbia

Eventually we got ourselves in the car, stopped at Timmy’s for provisions, and then again at the grocery store to get Canadian necessities (read: Cheezies, Hickory Sticks, Ketchup Chips, Sour Soothers, Dill Pickle Dip, Pizza Pops, Dad’s Goodie Rings) to keep us alive through the weekend, and set off.

From Fort Langley, we drove into Vancouver, where we caught the first of two ferries. I was kind of nervous about the ferries because I got motion sickness on a ferry from Cozumel a few years back, but I was quickly distracted by the fact that they served Nanaimo bars at the restaurant. And also they had a White Spot, which is kind of a famous Canadian burger place, my mom has been telling me about it for years, but I had never been.

After the first ferry, it was about an hour and a half drive to the next ferry stop, another hour long ferry ride, and then about another hour until we finally arrived in Lund.

I didn’t really mind the long journey though, because being with your best friend and a hydro-flask of craft beer and all the Canadian goodies you could eat against the backdrop of the ocean and the Rocky Mountains is kind of the best way to spend a Friday afternoon.

Lund is the cutest little town, right on the ocean, and the people there are very friendly. I would seriously move there tomorrow, if I could find a job.

Actually, I kind of have a job scoped out, the morning before we left we stopped in at Nancy’s Bakery, which is a really cute little restaurant that has amazing food, and even more amazing baking. I had one of their butter tarts, and almost cried, it was that good. It’s right along the beach, and I think baking all day with that view would be kind of unbeatable.

It was a very quick trip, I flew out Thursday night, and back to PHX Monday morning (but not before making a stop at BP’s for their spicy pierogi pizza), but I was very glad I was able to make the trip.

It was really nice to travel with her and see a new place, and it kind of got us inspired to take a trip somewhere together, maybe to the East Coast of Canada, since I’ve never been further East than Toronto.

I would also like to add, after reading through this post again, that I wasn’t just there for the food. I really only get back to Canada once every year or two if I’m lucky, and ALL my favourite foods are there, so I don’t feel bad about eating all the things whenever I have the chance, since it happens so rarely.

Posted at 9:48 am by jasminedesirees, on July 13, 2016

I wrote this on the train from Whitefish, MT to Minot, ND a few weeks ago. These pictures don’t really do it justice, as I was taking them through a window on my phone, but trust me, it was absolutely breathtaking.

      ———

I’m writing this from seat 61 of car 31005 on a train bound for North Dakota. I left at 7:30 this morning from Whitefish, MT, and the trip is supposed to take about 12 hours.

      travel by train

      travel by train

I’ve never taken this train before, I’m probably the only one in my family that hasn’t, but I did take an overnight train in Thailand from Koh Samui back to Bangkok.

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but so far, I’m in love. I have a window seat all to myself, and each seat has an outlet so I can re-charge my kindle and computer.

I had breakfast in the dining car with one of the nicest couples I’ve ever met, I thought that even before they bought me breakfast when the credit card machine wouldn’t work.

      travel by train

But the best part about this trip is the view. We’re going through the mountains, and the sun is shining through the trees, and it’s completely stunning and distracting. I downloaded two books and a bunch of show episodes on iTunes to watch since it’s such a long way, but so far I can’t break myself away from the window long enough to do anything but take pictures.

      travel by train

      travel by train

I saw bear grass for the first time as we wove through the mountains, which is exciting because for the last few years I’ve heard about it a lot, and had to just nod along like I knew what people were talking about, but never again.

Also, the food is actually really good, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of their entrees are vegan or vegetarian, with the option to add meat or dairy.

      travel by train

      travel by train

So basically, I’m well provisioned, completely entertained, and entirely comfortable. I’m starting to worry that 12 hours is not going to be long enough. This is kind of my ideal situation, left alone with nothing to do but read or write for hours at a time. I might just stowaway.

      brooklyn bridge

A few pictures from my last trip to NYC. I was finally able to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, about half way through the day of eating all the things/ walking all the miles, and it was pretty wonderful.

      brooklyn bridge

      DSC_8700

      brooklyn bridge

It’s something I wanted to do on both my previous trips, but the first time we basically ran out of time, and the second time, it was pouring, and I got distracted by shopping.

Nothing was going to stop me this time, even though it was realllllly cold out, and I was dressed inappropriately for the weather, as per usual.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

There were kind of a lot of people there at the beginning, but not everyone walked all the way across, so it kind of thinned out towards the middle.

I was trying to get to DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) area, as instructed by a few of my co-workers who live in Brooklyn, but I didn’t know when exactly to get off the bridge so I’m pretty sure I walked an extra mile and a half, just for fun.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

DUMBO was cool, I liked all the graffiti, there are some cool shops, and a glass merry-go-round and the waterfront was gorgeous. It poured rain almost my whole trip, and it was grey and freezing when I walked across the bridge, but just as I was getting down to the waterfront, the sky came out and I got an amazing view of the NYC skyline.

      brooklyn bridge

I came across the most adorable restaurant called The River Cafe, it was all covered with ivy, with its own little potting shed right beside it, right on the river. I almost decided to eat there, but it seemed like a pretty nice place, and I looked a bit crazy after spending most of the day walking in the wind and rain, so I decided against it.

      brooklyn bridge

Lucky for me, because I found paradise around the corner in the form of Juliana’s pizza (I’m pretty sure heaven is just being in a cozy restaurant beside a pizza oven with a glass of red wine on a frosty day) but I would love to go back and check out The River Cafe next time I’m in town.

I might be going soon, in the next couple weeks actually, and it’ll probably be my last trip for a while since I start grad school in August. I’m trying to make a list of things I want to do while I’m there, but so far all I have is to see the Book of Mormon, and to drink at a rooftop bar, and I think I’d be pretty satisfied if those are the only things I accomplished.

      coeur d'alene lake

I just realized it’s been almost exactly a month since my last post.

Things that have happened since then:

      • I got accepted into Grad School at ASU starting in August
      • I worked for two weeks out of the San Francisco office and ate robot food
      • I spent the weekend in Santa Cruz for my brother-in-law’s wedding
      • At said wedding, I drank too much and danced too much and I’m pretty sure I broke my toe
      • I visited my best friend in Bend, Oregon. We almost went to see Eve 6 in concert, but ended up playing beer darts all afternoon instead.
      • I drove 18 hours from San Francisco to Lakeside, MT, where I can be found lounging on the dock and learning how to Flyboard, if anybody needs me.

    • randomness in NYC

Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on April 1, 2016

A few random pictures from my trip to NYC in February. I was there for work, and it absolutely poured for most of the time I was able to run in the park a few mornings, which was heavenly as always.

I didn’t stay for the weekend this time, instead I took the latest flight home on Saturday so I would still have some time to creep around.

      NYC

      NYC

      NYC

I wanted to see a play on Friday night, I’ve been dying to see The Book of Mormon for years, but the only ticket I could find was standing, with a partially obstructed view for $100. I passed, but apparently I’m just going to have to suck it up and spend the money if I ever want to see it. They came to SF a couple of years ago and it was $800 a ticket, so $150 next time I’m in NYC probably isn’t terrible.

      NYC

I spent all of Saturday creeping (read: walking) all over the city, including a trip to Brooklyn, and eating ALL OF THE THINGS. It was the best day ever, but more to come on that. At the end of the best day ever, I still had some more time to kill before my flight so I decided to head to the Museum of Natural History, because I’ve wanted to go there for years.

      NYC

      NYC

      NYC

I didn’t realize they had a new exhibit on dinosaurs opening that day, so I was truly shocked to see a line that went on for 3 city blocks. I decided to skip it, and instead, I cut across the park and went to the Met.

What people (including me) don’t realize about the Met is that there isn’t actually a ticket price, it’s a donation. I didn’t get it until the cashier asked me for the 5th time if I was sure I really wanted to pay $25. I’m sure I couldn’t have looked stupider as I pointed to the sign and stammered inarticulately at her, but in the end I just ended up paying the full price so that the interaction could be over. Money well spent.

      NYC

      NYC

      NYC

Being at the Met in person was amazing, I went from room to room taking in all of the pieces, and so many of them I had seen prints of before, which did absolutely no justice to the real thing. Some of my favourites were the Vigee Le Brun exhibit, she painted images of Marie Antoinette and her children (I’ve probably read every single book ever written on Marie Antoinette, it’s a problem) and the Monet paintings.

      NYC

My mom bought me an enormous waterlilies print when I was in high school, and it was so big it took up almost the whole wall of our bathroom. It didn’t really go with anything else in our house, but it was love at first sight and I begged until she gave in.

Even just writing this post has me excited for my next trip. Truly love this city.

      IMG_20160123_115938

It’s kind of crazy to think that we’ve been living in AZ for a year now. It really doesn’t feel like it, especially since I travelled so much last year it kind of seemed like I was never here.

I’ve had company for the last 3 weeks in a row in PHX, and since the best part about having visitors is showing them around and taking them to all your favourite places, I’ve had to do some thinking about what those places are.

What I’ve realized is that I have tons of favourite places, and also places I still really want to try. So I decided to share my list with you all, in case you are ever in the PHX area, and are looking for a good place to hang out, or some really good drinks.

So here they are, not really in any particular order:

Culinary Dropout at The Yard– Culinary Dropout in Tempe is one of my favourite places to go, the food is good, the drinks are amazing (I like the Room Service or the Me Before You) and they have yoga (sometimes) and Party on a Bike (spin class) in the upstairs room all week. It’s just a cool spot. The vibe definitely changes depending on when you go. I’ve been there on a Wednesday night when my sister in town; we snagged a table with a built in fireplace, ordered some delicious appetizers (get the pretzels!) and played lawn games, and I took my mom there for a quiet lunch after the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum. I’ve also been on a Friday or Saturday night when all three bars are open, and it is complete madness and there is no hope of finding a place to sit.

The Duce– Our very first week living in Phoenix we were driving downtown to go skating, and we passed a bar called The Duce. It looked really fun, and I made a mental note to go there, but we didn’t end up going until a couple of weeks ago when my sister was in town. It’s the coolest place I’ve been in awhile. There is an outdoor patio, which is where we sat, but the inside is a pretty big space and it’s divided up into different “themed” sections. There are a couple different bars, and a “Sweet Spot” (pictured above) to get dessert. We went on a Saturday morning for brunch, and it was really chill and relaxing, but I’ve heard it gets pretty crazy at night. They have a boxing ring where you can pay $5 to go 5 minutes against the owner (who is a boxer) and they also do fitness classes on Sunday morning. It is a little bit pricey, the drinks are around $12 each, but they are big, with lots of booze in them, plus they are delicious. We ordered a Bloody Mary, a Berry Side Car and a Margarita, and they were all on the list of the best drinks I’ve ever had. The food was good too, I ordered the smashed potatoes in a jar, and it was basically just butter, sour cream and cheese with some potato, and it was so frigging delicious. D and my sister both got sliders, which are actually huge, and neither of them could finish. Definitely shareable. This is really long, but I have a lot to say. Love this place.

Chanpen Thai– This is a relatively new discovery. We bought a house and moved to a new area of Phoenix in December and we didn’t have a washer and dryer for a long time. Our weekly ritual became Thai takeout and laundromat night, so we were able to try all the new Thai places around our new place. Chanpen was by far the best, it’s a little further away than some others, but worth the drive. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, and there are only about four tables, so it’s best to order pick up, but it smells like heaven as soon as you walk in. I had yellow veggie curry (my fave) and it was the best I’ve had in a long time.

Four Peaks Tempe– Four Peaks is basically a Tempe institution. It’s a popular brewery and restaurant, a good place to watch a game or go with a group of friends. I had the veggie burger here, and it was really good, and the spinach artichoke dip is so good (it has jalapeno) that I actually gasped when I took a bite, and everyone thought I was choking. I’ve mostly been here for brunch for people’s birthdays, they mimosa buckets, it’s around $18 for a bottle of champagne and a carafe of orange juice. Also, the brew master at our favourite restaurant in Montana, The Tamarack, went to ASU and used to be a brewer at Four Peaks. Small world.

Pizzeria Bianco– This place was voted Best Pizza in America. It’s SO GOOD. It’s definitely more of a date spot, it’s pretty intimate inside with only a handful of tables. We ended up each ordering our own pizza, mine was margherita with braised mushrooms and I am not embarrassed to tell you that I ate the whole thing. It is kind of expensive, it was around $20/pizza, and they really only feed 1 person, but it was worth it. They also own the little house next to the restaurant and they’ve turned it into a wine bar/waiting area where you can sit inside or out on the front porch and play board games while you wait. My birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and I’m fairly certain I’ll be celebrating it here.

Pier 54– This little restaurant is a perfect hangout on a sunny, lazy weekend day. It’s all outdoors, on a little patio on The Lakes at Tempe, and they have a great deal on mimosas (buy 1 for $8, each refill is $1 after that), and they have the best hummus I’ve ever had. We go almost every weekend, and we always take people there for a chill happy hour. We’ve never been for supper, but they do have a deal where you spend $25 on food, and get a free bottle of wine, so we definitely need to try that one night.

The Watershed– The Watershed is right next door to Pier 54, but it has a different vibe. It has a huge indoor area with a bar and restaurant, and then an outdoor patio with a view of the lakes and also a game area with darts and corn hole (I hate that name). Some of their outdoor tables have fire pits, but you need to get there early at night to grab one of these. When my sister was here we tried almost every drink on the menu, and I would definitely recommend the Basil Smash.

The Farm at South Mountain– I’ve only been to The Farm once, on a hung-over Sunday morning after a friends’ wedding, about a year before we moved to AZ, but it was lovely. We actually moved to the South Mountain area recently so it’s pretty close, but we haven’t been back yet. The Farm is a picturesque acreage with areas carved out for different things. There are a few different restaurants on the property; we ate at the more casual one, I had a strawberry and goat cheese salad and fresh squeezed lemonade. They grow all their own fruits and vegetables, there are little goats to look at, and people were sprawled out on picnic blankets all over the lawn, eating and watching their kids play. They were also setting up for a wedding when I was there, and it was pretty stunning.

San Tan Flat– We went to SanTan Flats for my dad’s birthday last year. It’s quite a drive from downtown Phoenix, but it’s a fun place to go with a big group. Each table has it’s own fire pit, and you can buy s’more kits for dessert. They have live bands on the weekends and a big dance floor. I didn’t love the food, it’s not very vegetarian friendly, they mostly just serve grilled meat, but I still had fun.

Salut– I went to Salut with a group of girlfriends’ for dinner, and it was delicious. It’s a romantic little wine bar in Tempe, we sat at an outside table on the patio, which was all lit up with string lights. They had a great wine selection, but the best thing about Salut was their entire page dedicated to different types and combinations of bruschetta. Only one person out of our group ordered something different, and I think she regretted it once the food came. The rest of the menu looked delicious as well, but I don’t know if I could bring myself to order anything else.

The Perch– The Perch is in downtown Chandler, it’s an open, outdoor space decorated with cages of brightly coloured birds. The food was good (I loved the hummus) but the best part about this place is the rooftop bar. It has lot of comfortable seating, and misters for those miserably hot AZ summer days, plus it has a great beer selection, including a grapefruit one that tastes like Orange Crush.

Places I haven’t been but really want to try:

Ocotillo– I haven’t been to Ocotillo yet, but I’ve heard from a few people that it’s the best new spot in the valley. Their menus look so delicious, and they also have a little coffee shop that’s open every day. I’ve been thinking of going there on a weekend afternoon to get a coffee to check it out before we head into the restaurant, but we haven’t been home at all lately.

Top of the Rock– Another place I haven’t been to yet but hope to go one day. This is one of the fanciest/most expensive restaurants in Phoenix from what I’ve heard, but the view looks so incredible that it’s probably worth it.

Sweet Tooth Fairy– I only realized recently that this bakery was in AZ, I thought it was only in Utah. I found out a few weeks ago, and then was creeping on their website, and discovered that they make Nanaimo Bars, which are my absolute favourite, and not something I’ve ever seen in America before. I bugged D incessantly to take me there, but when I finally wore him down and he agreed, I called to double confirm that they had Nanaimo Bars, and they were out. They only have them every few weeks. I asked the baker to send me a schedule so I would know when to come in, which is a totally normal and reasonable thing to do.

Mystery Room at the Arizona Biltmore– There is an actual 1920’s speakeasy in the Arizona Biltmore. It’s only open Sundays from 8-11 p.m. and you need a password to get in,  but it’s cool that they have something like that in Phoenix.

This post was a lot longer than I anticipated, I’ve been working on it for weeks since I kept remembering other good places and adding them in. Let me know if you have any suggestions for good places to eat or drink in the area, I’m always on the lookout for new favourites!

I’ve been hibernating a little bit these past couple of weeks, between studying for the GRE, and renovations to our new house, there never seems to be enough hours in the day.

A spontaneous trip to Montana could not have come at a better time.

    • seattle: everything else part 2

Posted at 8:50 am by jasminedesirees, on January 13, 2016

I was creeping around in blog drafts folder yesterday and realized I never posted the last of my photos from Seattle, which is a shame because these were some of my favourite things I saw when I was there.

These rainbow crosswalks in Capitol Hill are what dreams are made of. I don’t understand why this isn’t mandatory everywhere. Even though it was late at night and absolutely pouring, I felt exactly like Rainbow Brite every time I walked across the street. And I mean exactly.

We were in Capitol Hill to visit the Unicorn Bar. It was such a cool space, even though we went on a Sunday night and we were the only ones in there except for the bartenders and a man in a gold lame dress.

We stopped off at Poquito’s for supper and had the absolute best strawberry margaritas of my life.

The next day, while we were on our way back from Discovery Park, we begged our Uber driver to make a couple of stops, so we were able to see the Fremont Troll, and the house that inspired the Pixar movie UP. Apparently they are tearing it down soon so I was really glad we were able to see it in person.

So that concludes my trip to Seattle, I really loved that city and started looking at jobs and places to live once I got home. We have probably a year and a half to two years left in Phoenix, and then who knows?

The one place I wanted to go to in Seattle that we never made it to was The Pink Door near Pike Place Market. The first night we were so tired from our exploring that we couldn’t have stayed awake for the Burlesque show (it’s not until 11), and Sunday night it was booked for a private event.

But that just gives me one more reason to go back, I suppose.

    • autumn in new york: part 2

Posted at 9:09 am by jasminedesirees, on December 17, 2015

Part 2 of my visit to NYC in October.

On Saturday morning, we woke up early and moved out of the Empire to my friend’s aunts house on Park Avenue. It was the most adorable apartment I’ve ever seen, I never wanted to leave. It had so many rooms, but it wasn’t all modern and fixed up.

She had been renting it for decades, before Park Avenue was “Park Avenue” so it’s this quaint little place with long, sloping hallways and two whole rooms filled with books. My friends’ aunt travels all over the world doing volunteer work, so her entire apartment was decorated with things from her travels and pictures of her all over the world. Life goals, seriously.

Once we were all moved in and ready to go, we set out for the High-Line. I’d wanted to see that on our last visit but we ran out of time. Because it was a gorgeous October day, it was really busy, but I’m still glad we got to do it.

We walked the High-Line down to the Meatpacking District, where we stopped off at the Gansevoort Market to eat all the things. I could have spent hours in there, it was such a neat little space and every food stall looked more delicious than the last.

We spent the rest of the day wandering around, we did some shopping, went to Times Square to get show tickets from the TKTS booth and got caught up in a protest. The whole street was shut down by Black Lives Matter protesters, which was pretty crazy to see in person, there were so many people marching.

It was all very peaceful from what I saw, but the streets were lined with police, and there was a feeling in the air like something could happen, a heightened awareness. Nobody was on their phones or unaware, everyone was paying attention and talking to each other, which is rare these days. We stayed for a long time, but eventually we got hungry so we went to the Plaza for snacks.

There is a food court in the bottom of the hotel that had so many good desserts it was hard to choose. We ended up getting the most amazing hot chocolate of my life from a little stall in the back right corner. It was literally just melted bittersweet chocolate. I could feel myself getting sicker with every sip but it was so delicious I didn’t even care.

That night we went to The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, and it was amazing. My older sister and I used to listen to the soundtrack on road trips and sing our little hearts out, so it was really amazing to see it performed live. I especially loved the scene where he takes her down to his lair under the opera house, the floor comes apart and flickering lanterns and smoke comes up everywhere.

At the end of the show, the Phantom (James Barber) came out to thank the audience and even his speaking voice was breathtaking.

On Sunday morning we had planned to go to Brooklyn, but we stopped off at Rockefeller Center and ended up getting sucked into the shopping in the area (I blame you, TopShop) then going up to the Top of the Rock. We almost went to the Empire State Building, but it was so expensive (like $80/person) and I’d been to Top of the Rock before and loved the view up there so we did that instead.

We made a quick stop off at Junior’s for the best cheesecake in the world, before heading for the airport. It was so nice to spend time with my friend and explore new parts of the city. Just writing this post has made me so excited for my next trip, which should be in January.
