Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on December 28, 2016

We’ve been in the Bay for the last couple of weeks after the semester ended, and we ended up celebrating Christmas on December 24th this year, just because it worked better for a lot of people’s schedules.

So on the 25th, we woke up and had breakfast and opened up our stockings, but then we didn’t really have anywhere we needed to be. It turned out to be a gorgeous day, so we decided to go for a hike and try to burn off some of the treats we’ve been eating. I made two huge bags of puppy chow on the 20th and they were gone before Christmas Eve.

Missions Peaks was about 7 miles total, and was only about 30 minutes away from where we were staying, so it was kind of perfect. It was kind of hard in some spots, it had rained a few days before so it was a bit slippery, and parts of it were pretty steep. Also, there are cows.

      mission peak

      mission peak

It took us about 3 hours total, but the view from the top was gorgeous, and it was nice to get outside and actually do something, even though I like drinking mimosas in front of the fireplace as much as the next guy.

It’s a great option if you are looking for a hike in the East Bay, especially on a clear day because you can see the entire Bay.

Tomorrow we are off for a couple of days in Big Sur, and I am SO excited. We’re supposed to have good weather, and we are leaving super early to try to snag a cliff top spot. It might be really cold, but between by batman onesie and the 400 pairs of socks I got for Christmas, I may avoid freezing to death.

We left Montana at 4:30 a.m. to drive back to AZ in August, and spent the first night in Salt Lake City. I’ve really only been to the airport there before, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it was really beautiful there. Our original plan was to go hiking at Cecret Lake and Lake Mary Trail, but there was a big bicycle race going on that had all of the entrances to the area where we wanted to go hiking blocked, and we would have had to drive basically all the way around the mountain to get to the other side if we wanted to go, so we ended up going to downtown SLC instead.

We went for drinks at a few bars in downtown and then went to check out the LDS Temple, which is right in the heart of the city. The grounds were gorgeous, and we went into the visitor’s center to learn more about the Mormon religion and the temple, which we didn’t even realize was a thing you could do, but it was really interesting.

We were only there for one night, we stayed at a really cute AirBnB, but I’d like to go back and spend some more time there, and hopefully visit Park City while we’re in the area.

    • arches national park

Posted at 8:00 am by jasminedesirees, on December 14, 2016

I can’t believe how long ago I actually started this post (August) vs. when it’s actually getting published, how embarrassing. But our trip to Arches National Park was pretty amazing, so I still wanted to share it.

When we moved to Arizona two years ago, one of the things that we liked about Phoenix was how central it was and how many cool places you could get with just a few hours of driving. So I made a list of places I wanted to visit while we lived in AZ, and Arches was at the top.

The problem is, it’s not really near anything else. It’s about 8 hours NE of Phoenix, so it’s not really on your way to Salt Lake City, or the Grand Canyon or anything like that, and there isn’t really much around it, except a few other national parks, so it’s kind of where you are going, if you are going there.

      arches national park

      arches national park

We were driving home from Montana in August, and it was already going to be like, 20 hours, so I guess I thought “What’s another 5?”, and decided to make Arches part of the trip.

We got to SLC the first night, and planned on going hiking but were thwarted by a biking event, so we just went drinking instead. The next morning we were up early, had breakfast, and drove the rest of the way to Moab, which is where Arches is located.

About half way there the landscape started getting really rugged and gorgeous, with jutting rocks and beautiful vistas around every corner, so it kind of felt like we were in the park already, and it went by really fast. We got a campsite at a really cute little campground right outside the front gate of the park.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

We got settled in and then went to the park about 11 a.m.. If you are going to Arches, especially in August, make sure you have a full tank of gas, and bring LOTS of water and snacks. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, but the park is enormous, and you drive around it and stop at any of the Arches or areas you want to see.

There is nowhere to get gas (obviously) so if you had to stop, and drive back out to Moab to fill up, it would take probably an hour. There are also only a few places in the park where you can fill up your water bottle, and they are few and far between.

It’s a lot of hiking and walking around to see everything, so having water on hand is essential, especially when it’s 110 degrees, like it was when we were there. Also, sunscreen.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

There are lots of arches and things to see inside the park, and you get a map when you drive through the gate so you can see which ones you want to visit. There are some that are better to see in the morning, and some better at night, depending on the lighting and where the sun is located, and there are some that are really famous and pretty busy all the time.

My favourite things to see inside the park were Double Arch and Turret Arch. Balanced Rock, Devils Garden and the Windows are very popular too. We stopped at the parking lot to go to the Windows, and there were a lot of people there, so we took a right at the trail and ended up at Turret Arch, where there were hardly any people, and I thought it was one of the best ones we saw.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

Delicate arch (the very last picture) is the image you often see of Arches, and there were tons of people up there to get a picture of it with the sunset behind it, but it’s kind of a long walk, and after being in the sun almost the whole day, and being in the park for about 8 hours at that point, I was not into it, so we just went to a view point to see it, and then went back to the campgrounds.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

It was still so hot out that we put our bathing suits on, bought a six pack of beer and some frozen lemonades from the little convenience store, and played in the pool while the sun set.

We didn’t have any camping gear with us, but we bought sleeping bags at Target (which I’m hoping to use again in the next couple of weeks!) and made a bed in the back of the truck. We ate bag salads on paper plates for supper, watched a movie on my laptop and then fell asleep under the stars.

It was kind of the best day ever.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

Sleeping in the truck always reminds me of our time in Australia where we spent two months sleeping in the back of our Subaru, or my birthday last year where we spent the weekend in San Diego. Just being able to jump in the car and go somewhere without stressing about logistics and planning everything out is honestly one of my favourite things to do.

We did get woken up by a wicked lightening storm at about 3 a.m., but even that was kind of cool.

If you are going to Arches, I would suggest going early in the morning to hit some of the “sunrise” arches, then going back to your hotel or campsite for a few hours during the hottest part of the day to eat, relax and get out of the sun, and then going back to the park later in the afternoon to see a few more things and catch the sunset.

      arches national park

      arches national park

      arches national park

I’m so glad we got to cross Arches off our list, it’s honestly stunning, I kept wishing we had Derek’s motorcycle with us because cruising those roads is probably the reason bikes were invented. As we start to plan where we are moving to next (more on that soon!) we’re trying to do as much as possible before we go. This is hopefully still going to happen, but it might have to wait until April, once next semester is over.

A few snaps from the summer, including a visit to the NoDak, my grandpa’s birthday party in Sasky, and a lot of days spent on the water. I’m applying for an internship for next summer, so I’m glad I got in as much ‘home’ as possible while I had the chance.

    • NYC summer

Posted at 8:36 am by jasminedesirees, on August 15, 2016

I was back in NYC in June for work for a few days, and it was my first time in the city in the summer. It was definitely hot and humid (my hair wasn’t impressed) but it was perfect for my agenda, which was work, run in the park and drink at as many rooftop bars as possible.

I flew in on a Saturday afternoon, and met up with some friends on the upper west side for Mexican food, Magnolia’s, and all the rooftop wine. The view of the park was amazing.

Sunday I wandered around, did some shopping, and watched the Pride parade. It was really neat to be there in person, and everyone was having such a great time. It was so hot though, and for some reason I was wearing jeans, so I eventually had to escape into the nearest air conditioned Zara.

      new york city

On Monday I finally got to try By Chloe, after hearing about it for almost a year. Everything on the menu is organic and vegan. I tried the Quinoa Taco salad, and it was really delicious. We also got one of the enormous chocolate chip cookies and some sweet potato fries, the beet ketchup was really good also, and such a pretty colour. After work we went to a much needed yoga class, and then I walked most of the way back to my hotel.

      new york city

One of my favourite things to do in the city is just wander around, there is always something going on, and I love people watching and seeing all of the restaurants, shops and galleries.

      new york city

Tuesday was my last night in town, and we really wanted to find a good rooftop bar. We tried a couple near the office, but all of them were so packed that we ended up wandering around and found ourselves at a German Beer Hall drinking enormous beers, at enormous tables, with enormous pretzels, watching groups of people do shot-skis, while listening to Polka music. It was really random, but really fun.

      new york city

After we left the beer hall, we made one last ditch effort to get on a rooftop, and found ourselves at Salvation Taco. The rooftop was crowded, but we managed to snag a table, some chips and salsa, and some delicious margaritas. The view from the rooftop was gorgeous, and I loved the decor.

Writing this post has kind of made me sad, I’m starting Grad School in two days (!) so tomorrow is my last day at my current job. I’m going to miss everyone I’ve worked with for the last couple of years, and I don’t know when I’ll be making it back to NYC, so I’m really glad my last trip was such a great one.

A few months back, I was lucky enough to make a trip to northern B.C. to visit my best friend. Unfortunately, it was for sad family reasons, but I’m glad I could be there for her, and also see this amazing place for myself, since she has been trying to get me to visit for years.

      british columbia

      DSC_8754

It’s not an easy place to get to though. I flew from Phoenix to Seattle, Seattle to Bellingham, where I was picked up by her and her husband. We drove across the border into the GWN, and spent the night at her mom’s house in Fort Langley, B.C.

      DSC_8756

      DSC_8755

The next morning, we were up bright and early to walk around Fort Langley a little bit (it’s such a neat little town, their town hall is used in a lot of movies and TV shows, incuding Once Upon a Time and Supernatural), and eat amazing scones from Blacksmith Bakery.

      british columbia

      british columbia

Eventually we got ourselves in the car, stopped at Timmy’s for provisions, and then again at the grocery store to get Canadian necessities (read: Cheezies, Hickory Sticks, Ketchup Chips, Sour Soothers, Dill Pickle Dip, Pizza Pops, Dad’s Goodie Rings) to keep us alive through the weekend, and set off.

      british columbia

From Fort Langley, we drove into Vancouver, where we caught the first of two ferries. I was kind of nervous about the ferries because I got motion sickness on a ferry from Cozumel a few years back, but I was quickly distracted by the fact that they served Nanaimo bars at the restaurant. And also they had a White Spot, which is kind of a famous Canadian burger place, my mom has been telling me about it for years, but I had never been.

      british columbia

      british columbia

      british columbia

After the first ferry, it was about an hour and a half drive to the next ferry stop, another hour long ferry ride, and then about another hour until we finally arrived in Lund.

I didn’t really mind the long journey though, because being with your best friend and a hydro-flask of craft beer and all the Canadian goodies you could eat against the backdrop of the ocean and the Rocky Mountains is kind of the best way to spend a Friday afternoon.

      british columbia

      british columbia

Lund is the cutest little town, right on the ocean, and the people there are very friendly. I would seriously move there tomorrow, if I could find a job.

Actually, I kind of have a job scoped out, the morning before we left we stopped in at Nancy’s Bakery, which is a really cute little restaurant that has amazing food, and even more amazing baking. I had one of their butter tarts, and almost cried, it was that good. It’s right along the beach, and I think baking all day with that view would be kind of unbeatable.

It was a very quick trip, I flew out Thursday night, and back to PHX Monday morning (but not before making a stop at BP’s for their spicy pierogi pizza), but I was very glad I was able to make the trip.

It was really nice to travel with her and see a new place, and it kind of got us inspired to take a trip somewhere together, maybe to the East Coast of Canada, since I’ve never been further East than Toronto.

I would also like to add, after reading through this post again, that I wasn’t just there for the food. I really only get back to Canada once every year or two if I’m lucky, and ALL my favourite foods are there, so I don’t feel bad about eating all the things whenever I have the chance, since it happens so rarely.

    • eastbound train

Posted at 9:48 am by jasminedesirees, on July 13, 2016

I wrote this on the train from Whitefish, MT to Minot, ND a few weeks ago. These pictures don’t really do it justice, as I was taking them through a window on my phone, but trust me, it was absolutely breathtaking.

      ———

I’m writing this from seat 61 of car 31005 on a train bound for North Dakota. I left at 7:30 this morning from Whitefish, MT, and the trip is supposed to take about 12 hours.

      travel by train

      travel by train

I’ve never taken this train before, I’m probably the only one in my family that hasn’t, but I did take an overnight train in Thailand from Koh Samui back to Bangkok.

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but so far, I’m in love. I have a window seat all to myself, and each seat has an outlet so I can re-charge my kindle and computer.

I had breakfast in the dining car with one of the nicest couples I’ve ever met, I thought that even before they bought me breakfast when the credit card machine wouldn’t work.

      travel by train

But the best part about this trip is the view. We’re going through the mountains, and the sun is shining through the trees, and it’s completely stunning and distracting. I downloaded two books and a bunch of show episodes on iTunes to watch since it’s such a long way, but so far I can’t break myself away from the window long enough to do anything but take pictures.

      travel by train

      travel by train

I saw bear grass for the first time as we wove through the mountains, which is exciting because for the last few years I’ve heard about it a lot, and had to just nod along like I knew what people were talking about, but never again.

Also, the food is actually really good, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of their entrees are vegan or vegetarian, with the option to add meat or dairy.

      travel by train

      travel by train

So basically, I’m well provisioned, completely entertained, and entirely comfortable. I’m starting to worry that 12 hours is not going to be long enough. This is kind of my ideal situation, left alone with nothing to do but read or write for hours at a time. I might just stowaway.

I’m back in AZ, and it is ungodly hot. It was 100 degrees in my bedroom last night, way too hot and sticky to sleep.

So I just sprawled out underneath the fan and watched this video over and over again. I don’t get insomnia very often, but when I do, surfing videos are my favourite thing.

It was around the twelfth time through when I finally passed out.

      brooklyn bridge

A few pictures from my last trip to NYC. I was finally able to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, about half way through the day of eating all the things/ walking all the miles, and it was pretty wonderful.

      brooklyn bridge

      DSC_8700

      brooklyn bridge

It’s something I wanted to do on both my previous trips, but the first time we basically ran out of time, and the second time, it was pouring, and I got distracted by shopping.

Nothing was going to stop me this time, even though it was realllllly cold out, and I was dressed inappropriately for the weather, as per usual.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

There were kind of a lot of people there at the beginning, but not everyone walked all the way across, so it kind of thinned out towards the middle.

I was trying to get to DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) area, as instructed by a few of my co-workers who live in Brooklyn, but I didn’t know when exactly to get off the bridge so I’m pretty sure I walked an extra mile and a half, just for fun.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

DUMBO was cool, I liked all the graffiti, there are some cool shops, and a glass merry-go-round and the waterfront was gorgeous. It poured rain almost my whole trip, and it was grey and freezing when I walked across the bridge, but just as I was getting down to the waterfront, the sky came out and I got an amazing view of the NYC skyline.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

I came across the most adorable restaurant called The River Cafe, it was all covered with ivy, with its own little potting shed right beside it, right on the river. I almost decided to eat there, but it seemed like a pretty nice place, and I looked a bit crazy after spending most of the day walking in the wind and rain, so I decided against it.

      brooklyn bridge

      brooklyn bridge

Lucky for me, because I found paradise around the corner in the form of Juliana’s pizza (I’m pretty sure heaven is just being in a cozy restaurant beside a pizza oven with a glass of red wine on a frosty day) but I would love to go back and check out The River Cafe next time I’m in town.

I might be going soon, in the next couple weeks actually, and it’ll probably be my last trip for a while since I start grad school in August. I’m trying to make a list of things I want to do while I’m there, but so far all I have is to see the Book of Mormon, and to drink at a rooftop bar, and I think I’d be pretty satisfied if those are the only things I accomplished.

      coeur d'alene lake

I just realized it’s been almost exactly a month since my last post.

Things that have happened since then:

      • I got accepted into Grad School at ASU starting in August
      • I worked for two weeks out of the San Francisco office and ate robot food
      • I spent the weekend in Santa Cruz for my brother-in-law’s wedding
      • At said wedding, I drank too much and danced too much and I’m pretty sure I broke my toe
      • I visited my best friend in Bend, Oregon. We almost went to see Eve 6 in concert, but ended up playing beer darts all afternoon instead.
      • I drove 18 hours from San Francisco to Lakeside, MT, where I can be found lounging on the dock and learning how to Flyboard, if anybody needs me.
